Despicable Me’ Franchise Director Chris Renaud recently sat down for an interview with FILMHOUNDS to chat about the upcoming installment of ‘Despicable Me‘, sharing his thoughts on the challenges of bringing the Minions back to the big screen. When asked about the possibility of bringing the Minions into a live-action setting, Renaud didn’t hold back.

God, I hope not. That’s my answer,” he said, clearly not a fan of the idea. The notion of taking these beloved animated characters and placing them in a live-action world seems almost sacrilegious to Renaud. He believes that the animated nature of the franchise is what makes it special.

I mean, if there were conversations like that, I haven’t been privy to them. But for me, what defines the world is that it is animated and it allows us to get away with what we get away with,” Renaud explained. He pointed out that some of the most iconic moments in the series, like locking a Minion in a vending machine or blowing up Gru, simply wouldn’t work in live-action.

These are really cartoon ideas, like what would have been in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. I think it just becomes something completely different if you do a live-action version. For me personally, not very appealing,” he added.

While Chris Renaud was tight-lipped about many of the specifics in ‘Despicable Me 4,’ he did hint at some exciting developments. Without spoiling the fun, Renaud mentioned that he had a particular scene in mind that he was eager to bring to life.

I did really want to sort of create what I’ll call a crossover event—an opportunity to see characters and things that we’ve seen across the years,” he shared.

But does this mean the end of the road for Gru and the Minions? Not quite. Renaud hinted that there isn’t a specific plan to wrap up the franchise just yet, leaving fans hopeful for more Minion madness in the future. When asked if the fourth film would mark the end, Renaud replied, “Not specifically.”
