Greta Gerwig Makes History With ‘Barbie’
Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie‘ movie debuted to an estimated $155 million at the North American box office over the July 21–23 weekend, a record-breaking amount that considerably outperforms Patty Jenkins’ ‘Wonder Woman‘ which had a $103.3 domestic debut. It now is the highest-recorded opening weekend for a female director in history. Before ‘Wonder Woman‘, Sam Taylor-Johnson’s ‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘ held the record for the best debut for a solo female director. Over the four-day Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend in 2015, that movie launched to $93 million, with a three-day take of $85 million.
‘Barbie‘ outperformed Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer‘, which opened to $80 million. The film also notched the best opening of the year thus far and one of the best debuts since the pandemic.
The film’s budget was 145 million and it already made back the money that was spent making it. The movie can be expected to make much more over the next month. It has already crossed the $300 million mark. It is, after all, the most anticipated movie of 2023.

The Audience’s Verdict
So far, the film has mostly received good reviews. With the exception of a few who label it as a ‘feminist movie talking about patriarchy’. But for the most part, the film is a laugh-out-loud comedy with layered deep jokes which will probably make you sit and think. The film has a strong and powerful message but Greta Gerwig has beautifully masked it with comedy. It’s nostalgic – as you think back on all the times you loved Barbie and as a grown-up, it gives you a deeper understanding of the rooted patriarchy and what it can do to men as a whole.
No further spoilers here. Take out your pink boots and your pink dresses, get dolled up and watch Barbie at your nearest theatre. It truly is worth it.
