‘Halloween’: The Origin Story That Made Michael Myers A Terrifying Legend

Every Halloween, when that eerie piano tune starts playing, one name always sends chills down spines: Michael Myers. That mask, that slow walk, and that breath behind it have become symbols of pure horror.

But why did Michael Myers start killing in ‘Halloween‘? Was it revenge, trauma, or something supernatural? Fans have debated this for years, but the truth feels far more unsettling.

The Beginning Of The Nightmare In ‘Halloween’ Franchise

Back in 1978, director John Carpenter made ‘Halloween‘, a small, low-budget horror movie that would go on to change cinema forever. It told the story of Michael Myers, a man who escapes from a psychiatric hospital and returns to his hometown to go on a killing spree on Halloween night. There was no tragic backstory or reason behind it. Carpenter created Michael to be the embodiment of evil. In fact, in the film’s end credits, the adult Michael wasn’t even listed as a person. He was referred to as ‘The Shape.’

When asked, Carpenter explained that evil doesn’t always have a reason. It simply exists. And that’s what made the movie so terrifying. The idea that someone could kill without motive or mercy. But as the film’s success exploded, Hollywood wanted to expand the story. And that’s when the mystery began.

The Family Twist That Changed Everything

Carpenter never wanted to make a sequel. He once said the original ‘Halloween‘ was meant to stand on its own. But after the movie became a blockbuster, he agreed to help create ‘Halloween II‘, and that’s when everything changed. In ‘Halloween II‘, fans learned that Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, was Michael’s sister. Suddenly, Michael’s senseless killing spree had a motive. He was hunting down his family.

Carpenter later admitted he wasn’t happy with this twist. In an interview, he said that giving Michael a reason “missed the point” of the first movie. He explained that Michael was “part person, part supernatural force,” and that trying to explain his evil made him less frightening. Still, the sibling storyline became a major part of the series.

As the Halloween franchise grew, new movies kept trying to explain Michael’s evil in different ways. Some sequels introduced strange supernatural ideas, like the ‘Curse of Thorn‘, which claimed that Michael was controlled by an ancient cult and forced to kill his family as part of a ritual. Others explored his childhood, showing him as a boy raised in a violent home.

But none of those versions scared audiences the way the original did. John Carpenter’s first vision worked because it didn’t explain anything. The fear came from not knowing; from realizing that evil could exist for no reason at all.
