Henry Cavill has always been a fan favorite, whether he’s saving the world as Superman or taking on a new challenge in the Marvel universe. In the recent Marvel hit ‘Deadpool and Wolverine,’ Cavill stepped into unfamiliar territory, joining a star-studded cast that has fans buzzing with excitement.
Meanwhile, ‘Deadpool and Wolverine‘ has been making waves for its unique blend of humor, action, and a few surprising cameos that have kept Marvel enthusiasts on their toes. The film, directed by Shawn Levy, features numerous actors reprising their superhero roles, but Cavill’s commitment left a mark — quite literally, on his stomach.
The Cigar Challenge That Came With Henry Cavill’s Role In ‘Deadpool And Wolverine‘
Henry Cavill, or should we say the “Cavillerine” (thanks to Ryan Reynolds for that gem), was required to keep Wolverine’s iconic cigar lit and in his mouth throughout the shoot. What sounds like a cool, rugged task, quickly turned into a nightmare for the actor. Imagine puffing away for eight hours straight — no breaks, just pure cigar smoke inhalation.
Director Shawn Levy shared the gritty details of Cavill’s ordeal in an interview with The New York Times. “He kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day,” Levy recounted. “I remember hearing the next day that Henry was sick to his stomach because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but never once did he waver.” Now, that’s some serious dedication to the role! But it begs the question—was it worth it?
This behind-the-scenes tidbit might make you think twice about the glamorous life of movie stars. While Cavill’s transformation into Wolverine is undoubtedly epic, the process wasn’t without its challenges. His commitment, however, paid off in spades, adding a unique twist to his character and the film itself.

The Cavillerine And Other Surprises In ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’
Shawn Levy’s vision for ‘Deadpool and Wolverine‘ included several Wolverine variants, and Cavill’s portrayal is just one of the many playful nods to both Marvel and DC fans. Levy elaborated further on Cavill’s cameo in an interview with Variety.
“If we’re going to talk about him, we must call him by his actual credited name, the Cavillerine, which Ryan coined. I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with that term. He said ‘yes’ right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful,” he said. “It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he’s appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero,” he added.
Adding to the mix, Levy considered some wild ideas, including featuring a real-life wolverine. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he revealed, “Number seven was an actual wolverine. We really wanted an actual wolverine, the animal, and he would maul Deadpool. But we came up with that idea too late to do a convincing digital wolverine, so that one’s in my back pocket should I need one for any sequels.”
‘Deadpool and Wolverine‘ is now playing in theaters nationwide.
