Todd Phillips, the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed ‘Joker’ films, has dropped a tantalizing tidbit about Lady Gaga‘s portrayal of Harley Quinn. While the previous version of the character was more accurate to the comics, it might not be the same for the ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’
In the upcoming sequel, According to Phillips, Gaga’s Harley Quinn will be a departure from previous interpretations, both in the comics and on screen. Additionally, he claimed that this version would be more realistic.

Todd Phillips Claims Harley Quinn In ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Will Be Realistic
The director revealed that they have stripped away the iconic elements that have defined Harley Quinn in the past, such as her high-pitched voice, exaggerated accent, and gum-chewing habits. “The high voice, that accent, the gum-chewing, and all that sort of sassy stuff that’s in the comics, we stripped that away,” he explained while talking to Variety.
Instead, Phillips and his team wanted Gaga’s Harley to seamlessly integrate into the gritty and realistic world of Gotham City that they established in the first ‘Joker’ film. “We wanted her to fit into this world of Gotham that we created from the first movie,” he added. Additionally, this bold decision doesn’t sit right with some fans.
They believe that stripping away her Harley Quinn-like traits turns her into another character. However, despite all this, the film definitely promises to deliver a fresh and unexpected take on the beloved DC Comics character. Additionally, by removing the stereotypical elements that have often defined Harley Quinn, Phillips is aiming to create a more nuanced and complex portrayal.

Todd Phillips Was Impressed By Lady Gaga’s Transformation For The Role
Todd Phillips has praised both actors for the dedication they had to their roles in ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’. However, according to Phillips, Gaga went above and beyond with method acting, even more so than Joaquin Phoenix. He revealed that Gaga often stayed in character outside of filming hours.
“But he doesn’t stay in character 24 hours a day. With her, I’d say she does a lot more of that than he does,” the director claimed. Additionally, the way Gaga talks about her experience with playing the characters reeks of passion.
Previously, while talking to Access Hollywood she claimed that her Harley was very authentic. “My version of Harley is mine, and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters,” she stated. She further talked about her exciting experience with filming.
“I loved working with Joaquin, I loved working with Todd. I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun,” she added. Moreover, with her undeniable talent and unique style, Gaga is sure to bring a fresh perspective to the role.
