“I Don’t Want To Bring The Heat…”: Lily Gladstone Responds To ‘Reservation Dogs’ Co-star, Devery Jacobs’ Criticism Of ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’

One of the most promising films during the awards season is Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, where it received nine minutes of thunderous applause. It is based on a book by David Grann of the same moniker. The director has shown the horrors that the Osages went through during the killings in Oklahoma.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ stars Lily Gladstone as the Osage Mollie Kyle, Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, and Robert De Niro as William Hale. Recently, Lily created history by winning the Golden Globe for ‘Best Actress’ for the film. However, her co-star in ‘Reservation Dogs’ expressed some discontent with the film, which Gladstone has responded to.

Recently, the ‘Reservation Dogs’ star, Devery Jacobs, posted a thread about the strong feelings she had after watching ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. In the first thread, she wrote that the film was “painful, grueling, unrelenting, and unnecessary graphic.”

Devery Jacobs found the film “hellfire” as she sat through a “movie explicitly filled” with atrocities being committed against her ancestors. The actress found the Osage characters “painfully underwritten” and she added that Scorsese gave “white men way more courtesy and depth.”

Now, Lily Gladstone, who played an Osage, has responded to the criticism meted out by her ‘Reservation Dogs’ co-star. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Lily said that Devery’s reaction “is a response to a lot of trauma” that the native women have gone through. Gladstone said, “I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair. Her reaction is hers.”

Lily Gladstone defended Devery Jacob, saying, “Her reaction is a response to a lot of trauma that particularly Native women feel seeing these things for the first time. I had a lot of time acclimating myself to the script.”

She continued, “The Osage people have had their lives to understand this history. The process of making this movie gave a lot of people a chance to speak. Ultimately, Osage’s reaction is what I care about the most.”

Lily Gladstone continued, “I’m so grateful that I can speak even a little bit of my language, which I’m not fluent in, up here. Because this business… native actors used to speak their lines in English and then the sound mixers would run them  to accomplish native languages on camera.”
