    The ‘La La Land’ actress joins a fantastic ensemble in Yorgos Lanthimos’ science fiction romance film. It’s about a woman finding her agency amidst being a puppet in the hands of various men. This bizarre takes its premise from an equally bizarre work of fiction written by Alasdair Gray.

    Yorgos Lanthimos’ movie ‘Poor Things’ is based on Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 movie. Gray is a Scottish author known for his postmodern writing style and is compared to writers like Franz Kafka, George Orwell, Jorge Luis Borges, and Italo Calvino. The story, partly inspired by Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein,’ centers on a woman called Bella Baxter.

    The official synopsis of the Yorgos Lanthimos‘ adaptation reads, “From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.”

    Emma Stone plays Belle Baxter, the central tragic figure in Lanthimos’ adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel. The screenplay is being written by the Australian playwright Tony McNamara. The film also stars Willem Dafoe as Belle’s creator. Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youssef also co-star in the Lanthimos’ latest project.

    Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, Margaret Qualley, Kathryn Hunter, Suzy Bemba, and Wayne Brett round up the supporting cast. The film has a theatrical release date of September 8, 2023, right in time for the Academy Awards season.
