James Cameron Reveals Official Title For ‘Avatar 3’: ‘Fire And Ash’

From Pandora’s beautiful, bioluminescent woods to the compelling Na’vi characters, ‘Avatar‘ pushed the boundaries of cinematography. When the first film opened cinemas in 2009, it did more than simply smash box office records; it crushed them, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time (until the Avengers arrived).

WithAvatar: The Way of Water‘ about to make a big splash in 2022, James Cameron has reminded everyone why he is the master of cinematic world-building. But if you thought ‘The Way of Water‘ was the final great adventure on Pandora, think again.

At the recent D23 Expo, James Cameron along with stars Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington revealed the official title for the third instalment of the franchise, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash.’

Now, if that doesn’t already have fans hyped, what Cameron shared next definitely will. While he didn’t drop any actual footage from the movie, he did unveil some breathtaking concept art. The art featured Neytiri, played by the ever-so-fierce Zoe Saldaña, dancing over flames while riding a banshee.

Cameron, ever the storyteller, gave fans a taste of what’s to come without giving too much away. “You’ll see a lot more of Pandora that you never saw before,” he said, hinting at new areas and possibly new dangers. He continued, “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before.” Now, if Cameron says the stakes are higher than ever, you know we’re in for an emotional rollercoaster.

A New Clan And Even Higher Stakes

So, what’s going down in ‘Fire and Ash?‘ Well, things are about to get intense for Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri. The film will introduce the “Ash People,” a new Na’vi clan that, according to Cameron, isn’t exactly the peace-loving type. In fact, this group is more about violence and power, which is a stark contrast to the other Na’vi clans we’ve met so far.

Oona Chaplin, known for her role in ‘Game of Thrones,’ will take on the role of Varang, the leader of this fiery clan. Cameron teased that Varang is a character you’re either going to “love or love to hate,” so expect some serious drama.

But that’s not all. Joining the cast alongside Chaplin are David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh, adding even more star power to an already impressive lineup. And don’t worry, the gang’s all here—Worthington, Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet are all returning.

In a bittersweet note, ‘Fire and Ash‘ will also serve as a tribute to Jon Landau, Cameron’s longtime collaborator, who died in July of cancer at the age of 63. Cameron honored his friend with a heartfelt statement, saying, “His legacy is not just the films he produced, but the personal example he set—indomitable, caring, inclusive, tireless, insightful, and utterly unique. He produced great films, not by wielding power but by spreading warmth and the joy of making cinema. He inspired us all to be and to bring our best, every day. I have lost a dear friend and my closest collaborator of 31 years. A part of myself has been torn away.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash‘ is set to release on December 19, 2025.
