It’s been nearly two decades since Keanu Reeves first donned the trench coat of the cynical demon hunter John Constantine, and fans have been desperate to see him return. After years of development delays, cryptic updates, and changing leadership at DC, the long-awaited ‘Constantine 2‘ has started to show real signs of progress.
Reeves recently teased that a new draft of the script is complete and ready to be submitted. But soon, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn dropped his own surprising revelation. And, this will probably leave you surprised as well.
The Road So Far For ‘Constantine‘

The original Constantine hit theatres in 2005, introducing audiences to Reeves’ gritty take on the comic book antihero. The film, which also starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, and Tilda Swinton, developed a loyal following over the years, even as plans for a sequel seemed to vanish into thin air. For a long time, ‘Constantine 2‘ was little more than a rumour. But in recent months, the conversation has come back to life.

Reeves confirmed in early October that the latest draft of the sequel’s script had been finished, and the team was preparing to send it to the studio for review. It was the most concrete update fans had received in years.
During a chat with BobaTalks, Gunn revealed that he’s spoken “on and off” with Reeves about the project. Gunn said he admired the people involved, describing them as a “great group” of talented individuals. Yet despite Reeves’ announcement about the script’s progress, Gunn admitted he hasn’t read it yet.
The Script’s Real Status

When Gunn took control of DC Studios and began working on its cinematic universe, it was decided that Constantine 2 would exist outside the main DC continuity. Like Joker and The Batman, the film would fall under the DC Elseworlds label, freeing it from any connection to Gunn’s upcoming Superman and Peacemaker projects.

Before these recent updates, progress on Constantine 2 had been slow-moving. In fact, there were long periods of silence from both the creative team and the studio. That’s what made the simultaneous updates from Reeves and Gunn so intriguing. In fact, they suggest the project may finally be advancing after years in limbo.
Sources indicate that the first major draft of the script was completed in autumn 2024. Probably, Reeves collaborated closely with director Francis Lawrence and the writing team. Reports say DC Studios approved the story outline in early 2025, leading to a new round of rewrites. What remains unclear, however, is whether this updated version has officially reached Gunn’s desk.
Once Gunn and DC’s executive team review the script, the next steps will likely involve refining the story and locking down key production elements. Only after approval will the process move into full pre-production, including casting confirmations, set designs, and location scouting. The Constantine franchise has always held a special place in DC’s catalogue.
