This one fall from hero to villain remains one of cinema’s greatest tragedies. In the prequel trilogy, we get to see his life as Anakin Skywalker. He was believed to be the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force.

He became evil simply because of falling victim to manipulation. All he ever wanted was to protect his wife. He had to embrace his dark side and transform into Darth Vader to save Padmé from the future he saw. But that only led to more destruction.

For the longest time, Maleficent was Disney’s most feared villain. It was in the 2014 film that we get to see her heartbreaking backstory. Maleficent was once a kind-hearted fairy and the protector of the moors. She fell in love with a human, Stefan, and shared the true love’s kiss.

But Stefan chose power over love when he betrayed her to gain the favour of the throne. He drugged and then cut off her wings, leaving her devastated and in excruciating pain. The betrayal was too much for Maleficent, and she had no trust in humanity left.

Before becoming an unpredictable anti-hero and a total badass, Harley Quinn had to endure too much manipulation and abuse. Her alcoholic father completely neglected her.

She was given away to an orphanage, where corporal punishment became a part of her life. As she grew older, toxic relationships continued to mistreat and undervalue her. Finally, the worst of them all was the Joker, the one she fell the hardest for.

The biggest and most heartbreaking twist of this classic Disney movie was when we found out that the terrifying Te Kā was once the gracious Te Fiti. She was the goddess who created and nurtured life, until she turned into the fiery demon.

It all started when Maui stole her heart, robbing her of her power and identity. She kept being feared and misunderstood by humanity, spending years desperately searching for what had been taken from her. But life only kept fading away from her.

6. Eric Killmonger In ‘Black Panther’ (2018)

The death of loved ones again turned Erik Killmonger into a villain. As a child, he saw his father, N’Jobu, die at the hands of his brother, King T’Chaka of Wakanda. Eric grew up to honor only his father’s vision.

He wanted to use Wakanda’s power to help people fight back against oppression. His methods turned violent and ruthless, but his motivation came from a desire to end suffering.

Before he was the murderous barber, Sweeney Todd was Benjamin Barker, a loving husband and father whose life was completely destroyed by corruption. Judge Turpin was obsessed with Barker’s beautiful wife, Lucy.

He falsely imprisoned Barker, sending him away for fifteen years. Upon returning to London, he finds that Turpin assaulted Lucy, and she had to kill herself. That’s when he reinvented himself as Sweeney Todd and started his quest for revenge.

4. Severus Snape In The ‘Harry Potter’ Franchise (2001-2011)

Through the whole franchise, we saw that Severus Snape was a cold and cruel bully. Only later did we find the full tragedy of his life. As a child, Snape grew up in an unhappy home.

He was bullied by James Potter and his friends, but was deeply in love with Lily. Yet, she also fell for James. Though he did join the Death Eaters, he became a double agent and the key to protecting Harry and defeating Voldemort.

The feared mutant leader of the X-Men series was born Erik Lehnsherr. He was once best friends with Xavier, and both of them cared deeply about mutants. To protect them, Xavier thought they should cooperate with humans.

But Magneto believed that they should be on their own. This distrust of humanity came from his childhood, filled with trauma and violence, because he was sent to a Nazi camp with his family. His greatest trauma came when Sebastian Shaw murdered his mother right in front of him in order to trigger Erik’s mutant abilities.

The trauma permanently left him scarred and shaped him into the monster he became as an adult. He hunted down those who were responsible, but his revenge only kept spiraling into a life of murder, cannibalism, and darkness.
