Rupert Everett‘s time in Hollywood brought him fame, but the actor now says the physical transformation he underwent to fit the industry’s leading-man mold has come at a painful price.
The ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding‘ star recently revealed that years of chasing a muscular physique have left him dealing with serious health issues, admitting he is now “almost crippled” as a result.

For Rupert Everett, the consequences of chasing a more muscular physique did not end when his Hollywood career slowed down. Instead, the actor says he continues to live with the effects today.

Speaking to The Guardian, Everett revealed that the fitness regimen he followed in the 1990s has taken a serious toll on his body. “I ruined myself. Now I’m almost crippled as a result,” Rupert told the publication.
The actor added, “I could never be bothered to do all those things, like stretching, which were necessary for lifting weights, because your tendons get tighter and tighter. So boring. I didn’t do any of that. So now my demise will be musculoskeletal, I think.”
While he committed himself to building muscle, Everett admitted that he ignored the less glamorous parts of training. Looking back, he believes skipping proper stretching and recovery may have contributed to the physical problems he now faces.
The Emotional Cost Behind The Physical Transformation Of Everett

Rupert revealed that his naturally thin frame fueled much of his insecurity. Reflecting on his younger years, he described just how lean he was before embarking on his physical transformation. “My a— was like two bones and a hole. And my legs were skeletal.” Wanting to fit the industry’s image of an attractive male star, Rupert dedicated himself to building a stronger physique.

However, he now sees that decision as part of a much larger obsession with achieving success and gaining acceptance in Hollywood. The actor admitted that his focus shifted away from acting itself. Instead, he became consumed with advancing his career and chasing an idealized version of success that always seemed out of reach.
“I was just obsessed about getting on rather than doing my job,” Rupert confessed. “I always felt I was missing out on some mythical life that was taking place somewhere else. That was my problem.”
Even as Rupert landed major film roles and worked alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, he says the drive to look attractive continued to dominate him. The actor explained that what many people view as vanity often has little to do with confidence. In his case, he believes it came from insecurity rather than self-admiration.
