‘Obsession’ became one of the surprise horror hits of the year. However, some fans think the movie might be telling its own terrifying tale.
There’s a disturbing idea that seems to be growing in the minds of people about 2023’s ‘Talk to Me’, and if that’s the case, both films are even darker.
‘Obsession’ Quietly Echoes The Most Horrifying ‘Talk To Me’ Scene

There is no official tie-in between the two films. However, there are definite similarities in the way that possession is treated in each film. More importantly, both horror films indicate that something truly horrific is occurring behind the scenes with the victims.

When Nikki falls violently in love with Bear in ‘Obsession’, Bear’s wish to get her to fall for him backfires. As the film progresses, viewers discover that Nikki is not just possessed. Rather, her true consciousness seems to be held prisoner in some terrible other dimension, while another version of herself controls her body.
It’s a reveal that’s both horrifying and funny. One of the most iconic scenes in the film is when Bear speaks to a customer service representative who is connected to the cursed toy and is briefly connected to the real Nikki, who is trapped somewhere beyond reality.
That idea instantly brought ‘Talk to Me’ to many horror fans. Riley is possessed for too long in the Australian hit and finds himself trapped. Later in the film, there are glimpses of a terrifying limbo-like world where victims suffer endlessly while supernatural forces play with their bodies. The similarities are impossible to ignore, even if they remain purely thematic.
Why ‘Obsession’ Ending Is Even More Brutal

It’s the ending of the two movies that makes the comparison so intriguing. Though ‘Talk to Me’ is a dark and sad tale, it provides a glimmer of hope. Riley lives and finds his family and eventually manages to break free from the nightmare that consumed him. There is still a way forward, but the emotional harm is done.
But comfort is not available when it comes to ‘Obsession’. Finally, Nikki is released from the curse, but she finds herself in a world of destruction. Friends are dead, Bear has sacrificed himself, and she is now faced with the repercussions of what she did during her time in that hellish state.
It’s a conclusion that sticks with you long after the credits roll. Regardless of whether or not the fan theory is correct, ‘Obsession’ and ‘Talk to Me’ both play off the same fear: what if you lose control of your body, and still stay conscious throughout the whole nightmare?
