‘Pretty Lethal’: Uma Thurman Turns Ballet Into Bloodshed In The Most Unhinged Action Thriller Of The Year

In Short
  • Uma Thurman stars as the villain in the ballet-inspired action thriller 'Pretty Lethal.'
  • The film combines ballet movements with martial arts to create a unique fighting style called ballet-fu.
  • 'Pretty Lethal' emphasizes themes of collaboration, empowerment, and the transformation of individual dreams into collective strength.

Action films tend to be based on the same formula: guns, car chases, and superpowered characters. However, ‘Pretty Lethal’ does it in a wildly different way.

The R-rated movie combines the beauty of ballet and the power of martial arts, forming a fighting style that is both graceful and rather violent.

The main focus is on Uma Thurman, the enigmatic villain of the movie, a former ballet prodigy and a gang leader. The plot of the story is based on the journey of a group of talented young dancers to a high-profile competition. However, their trip goes horribly wrong. The dancers are stranded in a remote forest when their bus stalls, and they find refuge in a remote roadside inn, only to realize that they have walked into a trap.

What starts as a hostage situation soon turns into a survival battle. Director Vicky Jewson had a strange concept of approaching the film: all action sequences must have their roots in ballet itself. Instead of making the dancers look like the action heroes of the day, the film constructs its fight choreography using actual movements of classical dance.

Jewson and her stunt crew learned the motions of ballerinas and how their power, flexibility, and training could be applied to fighting. The outcome is a fighting style that the cast refers to as ballet-fu, in which pirouettes, leaps, and accurate footwork are incorporated into action-packed scenes.

The cast (Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, Millicent Simmonds, Avantika Vandanapu, and Iris Apatow) trained in a rigorous ballet boot camp. They spent weeks training with professional dancers and stunt coordinators, and combined technique with fight choreography. For some cast members, the training was a return to their roots. For others, it was an entirely new challenge.

‘Pretty Lethal’ Is More Than Just An Action Movie

Although the idea of the film is violent, the message of ‘Pretty Lethal’ is surprisingly touching. Under the action and the glamorous choreography is a tale of collaboration, aspiration, and strength in others. The characters start the movie divided and competitive; each of them is concerned with their own success. However, when danger comes, survival compels them to cooperate in a manner that they had never anticipated.

Jewson wanted to make that theme of unity. She hoped that the film would be a tribute to female empowerment, not only in terms of physical power, but also in terms of solidarity and support. Thurman herself embraced that idea when she joined the project, happily stepping into the role of the villain to help highlight the young cast’s journey.

The emotional center of the story is the way these dancers turn into savage survivors. Finally, ‘Pretty Lethal’ is not only about glamorous fights or outrageous violence. It is about endurance, friendship, and the powerful moment when individual dreams turn into collective strength.
