In a year hungry for cinematic escape, Amazon MGM’s ‘Project Hail Mary‘ has rocketed to the top of the charts, delivering the biggest North American weekend so far.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling is based on Andy Weir’s popular 2021 novel. It has now exploded onto screens, earning a strong $80.5 million across 4,007 theaters in the region during its first weekend (March 20-22), showing that original stories, not just sequels or franchises, can still do well in theaters.

‘Project Hail Mary’: Cast and Storyline

In ‘Project Hail Mary,’ Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle-school teacher who is suddenly sent on a space mission to save Earth’s dying sun.
Critics hailed Gosling’s performance as the best of his career. He carries much of the film on his own at first, and later teams up with a memorable alien character. His role shows a mix of fear, intelligence, and bravery, similar to the kind of everyday hero roles often played by Tom Hanks.
The supporting cast, including Sandra Huller, adds more motion to the story. The film also uses impressive motion-capture work to bring its unique characters to life, making the complex plot about space threats, aliens, and intergalactic friendship easier to connect with.
