The wait for ‘Project Hail Mary‘ is finally over. The film adaptation of Andy Weir’s bestselling novel has arrived to strong early reactions from critics. After its first wave of reviews, the movie has debuted with an impressive 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes from around 100 critics, making it one of the most talked-about releases of early 2026.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the filmmaking duo behind ‘The LEGO Movie‘ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ the film also marks Ryan Gosling’s first major role since the massive success of ‘Barbie‘ in 2023.
Ryan Gosling Earns Early Oscar Buzz For ‘Project Hail Mary’

Ryan Gosling delivers what many critics are already calling one of the best performances of his career as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up aboard an interstellar spacecraft with no recollection of how he ended up there.
The critical consensus has been unusually uniform, with one critic describing the film as “an out-of-this-world adventure” and another calling it “a completely perfect movie.” One reviewer even noted Gosling “has never been more appealing,” fueling early Oscar buzz for the Academy Award nominee.

The Times (UK) praised the actor, writing, “Gosling is the sugar that helps the medicine go down. He hasn’t been this perfectly cast between roguish and ingenuous since La La Land in 2016.” Mashable summed up by saying, “Imagine The Martian meets Half Nelson meets E.T., and you’ll get some idea of the mirthful mash-up that is Project Hail Mary.”
Interestingly, ‘Project Hail Mary‘ currently holds a higher score than Andy Weir’s previous adaptation, ‘The Martian‘ (91%). The film even surpassed several of Gosling’s previous hits, like ‘Barbie‘ (88%) and ‘Drive‘ (93%).
‘Project Hail Mary’ Release Details

After the film’s London premiere on March 9, 2026, ‘Project Hail Mary‘ is set for a wide theatrical release on March 20 by Amazon MGM (in North America) and Sony Pictures (internationally).
With tickets already on sale and trailers generating huge buzz online, Amazon MGM is hoping for a change in fortune following its two successive theatrical flops with ‘Crime 101‘ and ‘Melania.’

Project Hail Mary Budget and Projected Box Office Opening

‘Project Hail Mary,’ reportedly made around a $200 million budget, was shot entirely without green screens. The film added 2,018 VFX shots in post-production to enhance physical environments rather than replace them. Every spaceship set was physically constructed.
As per general industry rule, a film needs to earn 2.5 times its production budget to break even. Based on that calculation, ‘Project Hail Mary‘ would need to gross around $500 million to reach profitability, making it the first movie of the year to reach half a billion dollar mark.
Deadline projected around $45-$55 million in domestic opening weekend, a number that needs to climb significantly for the film to turn a theatrical profit.
As word of mouth builds and more reviews roll in, ‘Project Hail Mary’ looks set to become a mega cultural event in early 2026.
