Filmmakers often use innovative methods to premiere their movies to generate maximum buzz and capture the attention of audiences worldwide. While mega-sport events such as the Super Bowl have often played a crucial role in a movie’s launch, some filmmakers have used augmented reality billboards to place virtual characters on city streets. However, ‘Project Hail Mary‘ has taken a complete detour from these conventional methods.
Starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the sci-fi adaptation has officially become the first movie in history to premiere in the stratosphere.
‘Project Hail Mary’s Out-Of-The-World IMAX Launch

IMAX pulled off an incredible stunt just before the film’s highly anticipated release. They sent a specially built screen up to about 110,000 feet in the stratosphere (the part of the sky from where one can see the curve of the earth and the sky turns deep, dark blue).
Against this stunning, space-like backdrop, clips from the film based on Andy Weir’s book were shown. While it would have been impossible for most people to watch in person, cameras, telemetry, or even a passing satellite could have captured the moment.
It is no secret that ‘Project Hail Mary‘ was designed for giant screens. But sending the footage to the edge of space, quite literally, took the campaign to a whole new level.
How The Stratosphere Stunt Echoes The Film’s Spirit

The stunt perfectly mirrors the story of Weir’s bestselling book and its film adaptation. Ryan Gosling stars as a lone astronaut, named Ryland Grace, who wakes up in deep space on a mission to save Earth from deadly microbes that are dimming the sun.

The film features scenes of isolation, intergalactic friendship with the alien “Rocky,” and urgent scientific discoveries, all set above the surface of a distant planet. This makes the promotional stunt a reflection of the movie’s story.
Ryan Gosling’s Sci-fi Epic Launches In Theatres

In an era of attention-grabbing spectacles, ‘Project Hail Mary‘ has truly gone above and beyond. The film stays faithful to Andy Weir’s book, and Ryan Gosling delivers a performance that has already earned wide critical acclaim and praise.
The film has been released in premium formats, including IMAX 70mm, IMAX Digital, Dolby Cinema, and select 70mm prints.
