“I Don’t Care If It’s Good”: Quentin Tarantino Explains Why He Will Not Watch ‘Toy Story 4’ Despite Loving The Franchise

The fourth installment in Disney’s ‘Toy Story’ was released in 2019 and followed Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) as they embarked on a road trip with six-year-old Bonnie. The movie was widely praised by critics as “delightful”, but Quentin Tarantino refuses to watch the film to date.

Tarantino has expressed his disinterest in watching ‘Toy Story 4‘ as he believes that the movie should have ended as a trilogy and the fourth part wasn’t needed.

The famed director Quentin Tarantino appeared on Club Random with Bill Maher, where they discussed how it’s difficult for filmmakers to wrap up stories in the form of a trilogy in a satisfying manner for the audience. So, because of his love for the franchise, the director said that he has “no desire” to watch ‘Toy Story 4′.

“I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the Toy Story trilogy,” Tarantino said. “I think there’s only one trilogy that completely and utterly works to the Nth degree and that’s A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”

Tarantino further went on to describe that Clint Eastwood’s Italian film series, which founded the Spaghetti Western genre, was successful because it followed a “one director vision” with filmmaker Sergio Leone helming all three films.

Quentin Tarantino Feels ‘Toy Story 3’ Was “Magnificent”

Tarantino further told Maher about ‘Toy Story 3‘, “It does what no other trilogy has ever been quite able to do. The first movie is terrific, but the second movie is so great and takes the whole idea to such a bigger canvas that it obliterates the first one. And then the third one does the same thing to the second one, and that’s kind of what never happens. You’ll see this big jump from the first to the second and they don’t really land the third one.”

Like the Dollars trilogy, Tarantino said that Disney’s animated franchise is able to accomplish the feat, and for this reason, he has no interest in risking his love for the trilogy.

In the case of ‘Toy Story’, the third one is just magnificent,” Quentin Tarantino explained. “It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. And if you’ve seen the other two, it’s just devastating. But the thing is, then three years later or something they did a fourth, and I have no desire to see it. You literally ended the story as perfect as you could, so no, I don’t care if it’s good. I’m done.”

‘Toy Story 5‘ will be released on June 19, 2026.
