Ruby Rose Blasts “Cretin” Sydney Sweeney After ‘Christy’ Crashes At The Box Office

The new boxing biopic “Christy” was supposed to be all about celebrating the strength and struggles of real-life fighter Christy Martin. However, instead of applause for its performance, storyline, and plots, the movie has sparked controversy for all the wrong reasons.

After the release of Christy, two popular Hollywood actors, Ruby Rose and Sydney Sweeney, have locked horns on social media. Things have become so heated that it has now escalated into a full-blown feud.

Christy hit the theatres last Friday, featuring Sydney Sweeney, where she stepped into the role of the legendary Christy Martin, who won the WBC female superweight title in 2009. While everything in the movie worked perfectly, it couldn’t really find its audience in the theatres.

According to Box Office Mojo, Christy earned just $1.3 million in its opening weekend. Surprisingly, one of the weakest debuts for a sports biopic in recent years. But even after all these, Sweeney stood by the project. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she thanked everyone who “saw, felt, and believed” in the film.

Sweeney said that if Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, it had already achieved something meaningful. She also reminded her fans that not all films are made for box office success. Maybe some are made to make a difference. However, not everyone agreed with her take. And that’s where Ruby Rose entered the picture.

Rose, best known for her role in ‘Orange Is the New Black‘, took to Threads to share her side of the story. And her post left fans shocked. She revealed that she was originally set to play Christy Martin and described the first version of the script as “incredible” and “life-changing.” According to Rose, the earlier team had strong ties to the LGBTQ+ community, and she felt a deep connection.

Rose even called Martin “Cherry,” a personal nickname that showed how close the story was to her heart. But when that version of the film didn’t move forward, Rose says she made peace with the loss. But things changed when she saw how Sweeney’s team was framing the movie’s release. After ‘Christy‘ underperformed at the box office, Sweeney’s PR campaign reportedly emphasized that she took the role “for the people.” And that was the final straw for Rose.

She claimed the message felt misleading, arguing that audiences didn’t want to see “someone who hates them” portraying their community. In the end, her anger boiled over. Rose called Sweeney a “cretin,” accused her of “ruining the film.” She finally ended her post with the words, “Christy deserved better.” Even though Sweeney’s representatives had been contacted for a response, they declined to comment.
