Ryan Gosling Got So Lonely Filming ‘Project Hail Mary’ He Created a Mop Best Friend and the Story Is Wild

In Short
  • 'Project Hail Mary' features Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, who befriends an alien named Rocky.
  • He had an unusual companion to combat loneliness on set.
  • 'Project Hail Mary' is based on a novel by Andy Weir and is set for release on March 20.

In the vast, isolating void of ‘Project Hail Mary‘, Ryan Gosling plays a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace, who finds an unexpected ally in the form of an alien named Rocky. But just days before Gosling’s interspecies friendship hits the screen, it seems that he faced a different kind of cosmic loneliness on set.

During the grueling production of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s sci-fi adaptation, Gosling had to spend extended stretches filming solo scenes. With a whopping budget of $200 million looming over the creators’ heads, the ‘Barbie‘ star had to ensure that every single scene was shot with utmost precision. However, after filming a scene for 100 days, Gosling hit a wall.

During a recent interview with IMDb, Gosling revealed that in a moment of desperation, he turned to the props department for an unusual request.

I remember there was a scene where I had been working for maybe a hundred days or something alone, and I was kind of needing company,” he said. “So I said, ‘I want to make a friend out of a mop, and I want to do the scenes today with this mop friend.'”

While this strange demand may have led many to question Gosling’s sanity, the crew, well aware of his dedication to the role, did not hesitate. So what did they do? They transformed a mop into a full-fledged stand-in buddy.

The actor stated that the creative team “got materials, and they made this mop for me that they called Moppy Ringwald. I got to spend the day, we danced, you know.
