The sequel trilogy brought Star Wars back to the theaters in grand style. Yet it failed to win over fans who believed the galaxy had indeed progressed. Rather than ushering in a new series, the movies were mostly a rehash of old battles, with the Empire now being the First Order and the Rebel Alliance the Resistance, while once again centering the fate of the galaxy around a small group of Force users.

Now that there are several new films in the works Lucasfilm finally has the chance to break out of that cycle.

A Fresh Era Matters More Than Revisiting Old Wars

The main drawback of the sequel trilogy was its use of nostalgia. โ€˜The Force Awakensโ€™ brought back iconic characters like Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Kylo Ren. However, the plot had a lot of similarities to the original 1977 movie. Later entries tried to change course, but midway through the trilogy, the course was altered, which made the story uneven and split audiences.

The next generation of Star Wars projects doesn’t have to follow this formula. The upcoming Rey film, which is reportedly set years after โ€˜The Rise of Skywalkerโ€™, will allow for the Jedi order to be reborn in new circumstances.ย

The franchise can take a different approach to another war between old enemies, and instead focus on what peace, rebuilding, and new philosophies would mean. That would give Star Wars the chance to grow, rather than just repeat its successes.

Lucasfilm’s announced projects, including Simon Kinberg’s mysterious new trilogy, could become the foundation for a completely different chapter of Star Wars. These movies don’t just have to be about Skywalker family legacies, but can also feature new heroes, unexpected villains, and galactic conflicts that extend beyond the familiar.

Audiences have already shown they enjoy it when Disney+ experiments with Star Wars, as seen in recent series. โ€˜Andorโ€™ was commended for its grounded political storytelling, and the first few seasons of โ€˜The Mandalorianโ€™ were praised as being adventures outside the central saga.

If the next generation of films can take that same creative liberty, they may change the face of Star Wars for a new generation. It doesn’t have to go so far as to try to replicate the magic of the original trilogy; it just has to have the confidence to tell stories that work on their own.

Star Wars finally has the chance to take a fresh turn after years of going back to the past. With Lucasfilm embracing new concepts rather than old formulas, the next generation may be the most exciting in decades.
