Steven Spielberg‘s highly anticipated sci-fi feature ‘Disclosure Day‘ is gearing up for a theatrical release on June 12. Many fans have shared theories about the trailer, with some comparing the film to the legendary filmmaker’s ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’ Made on a modest $19 million budget, the 1977 classic was a major box office hit, becoming the third highest-grossing film of the year with $306 million.
The film followed an Indiana electric lineman (played by Richard Dreyfuss) whose life changes after an encounter with a UFO. The incident leads to his obsession with seeking answers as a momentous event approaches. Now, ‘Disclosure Day‘ is hinting at a similar theme.

But most dramatically, the ending shot shows a flying saucer appearing in a burst of bright light, drawing comparisons to the alien ship scene from ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’
Wild Fan Theories About Steven Spielberg’s Alien Comeback

Spielberg has always loved making films about aliens, UFOs, and other extraterrestrial creatures. Now, almost five decades since ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind,’ he returns to the genre that fans love him for the most.
On X, one fan tweeted, “Finally saw the new Disclosure Day trailer…I’m starting to actually believe the Close Encounters rumor.” Another wrote, “What if DISCLOSURE DAY is actually a stealth sequel to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS…and at the end of the movie…Richard Dreyfuss is brought back to EARTH…SPLIT style!“

The Idea Behind ‘Disclosure Day’

‘Disclosure Day‘ marks Steven Spielberg’s first feature since 2022’s ‘The Fabelmans.’ Why did he go ahead with the project now? Does he think UFOs are real? “I don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now and I made a movie about that,” Spielberg shared.
It now remains to be seen whether the movie will live up to the hype following its release in a stacked June box office market alongside ‘Toy Story 5‘ and ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’
