He was the director who almost was. But long before fans were arguing about Chris Columbus’ version of Hogwarts, Steven Spielberg was quietly pulling the strings on one of the most important parts of the franchise: the cast.

In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Spielberg said that even though he walked away from directing the first ‘Harry Potter’ movie, he is the reason three of its most beloved stars got hired: Richard Harris (Albus Dumbledore), Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall), and Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid).

Spielberg was deeply involved in the early work on ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone‘. He even worked on the second draft of the script with writer Steve Kloves. During that time, he used his personal connections to pick the actors who would end up defining a whole generation’s childhood.

I had just worked with Maggie Smith on Hook, so I proposed Maggie Smith,” Spielberg explained. She played the strict but well-loved Transfiguration professor and had worked with Spielberg before as Granny Wendy in the 1991 ‘Peter Pan‘ movie.

When it came to the wise and gentle headmaster of Hogwarts, Spielberg reached out to an old friend. “I knew Richard Harris — he was a friend from a long time ago — I put him in the movie,” he said. He finished his trio by pushing for the late Robbie Coltrane, the beloved half-giant who first showed audiences the magical world.

The casting of the Hogwarts faculty is arguably the most flawless ensemble in franchise history,” one industry analyst said. “Spielberg’s fingerprints turned out to be the glue.”

This news has surprised fans because Spielberg’s role in the Potter franchise has always been full of “what ifs.” Even though his casting choices stayed, Spielberg never ended up directing ‘The Sorcerer’s Stone‘.

Speaking honestly on the podcast, the Oscar-winning director explained why he left and put an end to years of rumors about creative fights. “I got out of the movie for personal reasons. No anger, no big controversy, I stepped out,” he said.

Earlier reports said he left because of “creative differences” or because he wanted to turn the book into an animated movie. But in earlier interviews, Spielberg gave the real reason: fatherhood. At the time, moving his family to England for months to shoot the movie was a sacrifice he did not want to make.

The choice I had to make was taking a job that would move me to another country for four or five months where I wouldn’t see my family every day,” Spielberg explained earlier. “That was a ripping kind of experience.

Even though Spielberg handed the job to his “protégé,” Chris Columbus, the mark of his vision stayed. Columbus, who went on to make the first two “great Harry Potter films” according to Spielberg, got a cast that included the three legends hand-picked by the man before him.

Harris sadly passed away after the second movie, and Michael Gambon took over the role. But Smith’s McGonagall and Coltrane’s Hagrid stayed through all eight movies, holding down the fort for young stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

Spielberg does not regret putting his family before a billion-dollar franchise. “I’d sacrificed a great franchise, which today looking back I’m very happy to have done, to be with my family,” he said.

Now, as fans get ready for the new ‘Harry Potter‘ TV series on HBO Max, which will recast the famous roles with John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid, this latest news is a strong reminder that the magic of the original movies was partly shaped by the ghost of a director who cared enough to get the older characters exactly right.
