Sydney Sweeney And Amanda Seyfried Open Up About ‘The Housemaid’ Sequel Possibilities

The ending of ‘The Housemaid‘ has left audiences with so many questions. But much of the conversation now stretches beyond the final scene. Now that the film is officially playing in theaters, viewers are asking whether its two leading women would return if the show does.

Both Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney have now addressed the possibility and hinted at what the future could hold, without giving anything away.

Questions About ‘The Housemaid’ Franchise Are Inevitable

For those of you who’ve seen ‘The Housemaid‘, you know the film leaves some loose ends. It closes at a moment that feels unsettling and unfinished, which makes it hard not to imagine what could happen next. Millie Calloway’s story ends in a way that suggests her life has changed forever and that she may not be done facing dangerous situations.

That feeling wouldn’t feel weird once you know the film’s source material. ‘The Housemaid‘ is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel, and McFadden followed it up with ‘The Housemaid’s Secret‘ in February 2023. In fact, in June 2024, McFadden also released a third book named ‘The Housemaid Is Watching‘. With a full book series already in place, it was only a matter of time before questions about a sequel came up.

Ahead of the film’s release, EW asked Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney whether they would be interested in continuing the story on screen, and here’s what they had to say. Sydney Sweeney kept things hopeful but realistic when asked about a possible sequel and suggested that everything depends on how audiences respond to the film.

Sweeney said they would need to wait and see what happens. She added that she hoped viewers would love the movies just as much as the cast loved the books. And this shared excitement could allow the story to continue through more films.

Amanda Seyfried also sounded open to the idea. Even though her character Nina heads off to California at the end of the movie, she’s in. She said she would absolutely be willing to return for more films if the opportunity came up. Seyfried explained that if the movie didn’t perform well, the story could end there. But if it did, it clearly had the potential to grow into a franchise.

She also pointed out that she originally signed on only for this film because Nina’s storyline wraps up here. Still, she made it clear that the filmmakers knew she would be happy to come back if another installment moved forward.

In fact, director Paul Feig himself has hinted that the door is very much open. Speaking at the film’s premiere, he said that ‘The Housemaid‘ is the first book in a trilogy. In the end, the audience support would be the deciding factor. If people show up and watch the film, he would love to explore what Millie does next. For now, nothing is confirmed, but the interest is clearly there.
