The spine-chilling trailer for ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ has officially dropped, and it’s everything horror fans hoped for and more. As the fourth and final chapter in the core Conjuring series, this installment is not just another eerie investigation for Ed and Lorraine Warren.
It’s a bittersweet farewell to the beloved paranormal duo portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Directed by franchise regular Michael Chaves, ‘Last Rites’ dives headfirst into a sinister new case that promises to be their most terrifying and possibly fatal yet.
‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Might Mark The End For Ed And Lorraine

The trailer opens on a somber note, with Ed giving a nostalgic tour of the infamous artifact room. Longtime fans will immediately recognize some infamous relics: the painting of the demonic nun Valak and, of course, the cursed Annabelle doll sealed behind glass. There’s an unsettling calm in Ed’s voice as he reflects on their thousand-plus cases. However, this moment of peace is short-lived.

In true Conjuring fashion, horror abrupts peace. An image of a ghostly hand on their daughter’s shoulder and a scene of a young girl tormented by levitating dolls signal that something profoundly evil is awakening. Lorraine, always the more sensitive of the two, admits, “Something is different.” And she’s right. The quick flashes of horrifying images give goosebumps to even the most seasoned horror veterans.

In another horrifying moment, a demonic voice whispers to Lorraine, “We’ve been waiting so patiently for you.” That line alone is enough to send shivers down your spine. It’s clear this isn’t just another haunting; this time it’s personal. The real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren passed away in 2006 and 2019, respectively. So, it’s entirely possible that their fictional counterparts might meet a grim fate.
The stakes have never been higher, and ‘Last Rites’ seems to honor their legacy. But what’s truly refreshing is that the movie isn’t just banking on nostalgia or familiar villains. While Valak and Annabelle make appearances, there’s a new demonic entity in town, and it looks like this evil force will take things to terrifying new heights.

One image features Mia Tomlinson as Judy Warren, Ed and Lorraine’s daughter. Previously portrayed by Sterling Jerins and McKenna Grace, Judy’s presence in this final film adds a strong emotional undercurrent, especially given the trailer’s hint that evil is targeting her. Moreover, what truly heightens the anticipation is the film’s setting and storyline. ‘Last Rites’ is set in 1986, five years after the events of ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’.
With Ed still recovering from a heart attack suffered during that case, the couple has stepped away from exorcisms. But when one of their most chilling real-life cases rears its head (the Smurl haunting), they are drawn back into the supernatural one last time. The Smurl family haunting was one of the Warrens’ most publicized investigations.
Taking place in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, the family claimed their home was plagued by everything from putrid smells and growling voices to physical assaults from an invisible force. Their story was even featured on national television and chronicled in the book. All in all, ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ seems to be the kind of film that understands the weight of its own legacy.
