Although ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ is a prequel to ‘The Hunger Games’, it does not sing the same tune as the latter. The dystopian action-adventure novel written by Suzanne Colline is being adapted into motion pictures directed by Francis Lawrence which will be released on November 17, 2023.

The plot follows a young Coriolanus Snow played by Tom Blyth and the events that eventually lead him on the path to becoming the tyrannical leader of Panmen, also featuring his relationship with the Hunger Games tribute Rachel Ziegler’s Lucy Gray Baird during the 10th Hunger Games. The supporting cast includes Peter Dinklage, Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer, and Jason Schwartzman.

Lucy Gray is the female protagonist of ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’, very different from Katniss Everdeen played by Jennifer Lawrence. It covers a chapter of President Coriolanus Snow’s teenage life. He is a part of the Hunger Games’ first batch of mentors responsible for training the tributes. During his time at the academy as a mentor, he developed a relationship with the Lucy Gray Baird, District 12 tribute.

Some of the novel’s readers speculated that Lucy has a deep connection to the main Hunger Games‘ trilogy. It is also possible that she might be Katniss Everdeen’s grandmother. Although these theories have no solid proof, Lucy is certainly important to Katniss’ story. However, Francis Lawrence breaks a reality answering all the speculations.

Katniss Everdeen and Lucy Gray Baird, both play the female protagonist in their version of the story. However, during an interview with Empire magazine, Francis Lawrence shared that Lucy is the exact opposite of Katniss Everdeen. He explains “Katniss was an introvert and a survivor. She was quite quiet and stoic, you could almost say she was asexual. Lucy Gray Baird is the opposite. She wears her sexuality on her sleeve, and she really is a performer.”

Although there are few parallels drawn between the female protagonist. Lucy Gray as well as Katniss Everdeen, both belonged to District 12, poverty-stricken and hopeless. Just like Lucky, Katniss was the only hope of District 12. Also, Lucy is also a composer of the song ‘The Hanging Tree‘, which was taught to Katniss by her father and had immense importance in ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay‘.
