The Stranger Things’ actress spoke about the challenges she faced while working on the sequel in an interview with Empire. She will be returning as Lydia Deetz after almost 36 years. “It’s just one of the most special experiences that I’ve ever had,” said Ryder. “The fact that we’re coming back to it, it’s… It’s beyond. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt this way. This is a first for me. I’ve never revisited a character, ever.”

When talking about the challenges she faced, Ryder said it was about evolving her character with time. “I went through so many stages of, ‘Who is she now?’, but I always wanted to have it be Lydia. She can’t lose who she was,” explained Ryder. “She can’t be the same person, she can’t be just completely deadpan, she has to have evolved, but she also has to have kept that thing she had when we first met her. So that was the big challenge for me.”

Winona Ryder Took Inspiration From Her Own Life While Playing Lydia

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ has been like getting on a time machine for many of the stars as well as the director Tim Burton. He even talked about how seeing Michael Keaton back into the iconic costume and makeup was “a weird out-of-body experience.

The same goes for Winona Ryder as she stepped into the shoes of Lydia Deetz. In the sequel set almost 40 years after, is all about Lydia’s teenage daughter Astrid. After returning to Winter River, Astrid discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and opens the portal to Afterlife which releases Betelgeuse.

So playing an adult Lydia who is also a mother was very challenging for Ryder. “My lived experience, even though it’s very different… You know, you grow up, and things change. Life happens,” said Ryder when she talked about drawing inspiration from her own life.
