It is an open secret that, in most cases, reboots of original films do not sit well with viewers. They often receive a lukewarm reception, face harsh criticism, and, at best, manage only a fairly decent run at the box office.
This is one of the many reasons why Hollywood usually chooses not to go for reboots. However, there are instances where revisiting an older film feels necessary, especially when a visionary director is confident about reimagining it with a fresh cast and lessons learned from past misfires. Here are five upcoming movie reboots that genuinely have the potential to surpass the originals.
5. Highlander (2027 Window)

Russell Mulcahy’s 1986 original ‘Highlander‘ and its subsequent sequels built a cult following with their idea of immortal warriors and the famous line, “There can be only one.” However, the films were also riddled with problems like outdated effects and a story that could feel a little tricky at times.

Now, Chad Stahelski, known for John Wick, is working on a reboot with a more polished style and a star-studded cast that almost guarantees a box office hit next year upon release.
Henry Cavill (known for portraying ‘Superman‘ and ‘The Witcher‘) will play Connor MacLeod, alongside Russell Crowe as Ramirez and Dave Bautista as the Kurgan. The filming is already underway in Scotland, and with Stahelski’s style of action, this new version could finally deliver the kind of epic the series always aimed for.
4. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew (November 2026)

The earlier ‘The Chronicles of Narnia‘ film series, released between 2005 and 2010, had strong moments, but they could feel uneven. Some parts could not fully capture the deeper themes from the original books.
Now, Greta Gerwig is bringing a new energy and approach with ‘The Magician’s Nephew‘, which tells the origin of how Narnia was created. Luckily, for the novel fans, filming has already been finished, and the movie is expected to have a big IMAX release before arriving on Netflix around Christmas this year.
Gerwig is already known for her strong character work and emotional storytelling in films like ‘Barbie’ and ‘Little Women.’ And it is because of that many expect this version to explore the story more in depth, with better visual design and, most importantly, a stronger sense of magic.

3. Resident Evil (September 2026)

Gamers have long been disappointed with Paul WS Anderson’s on-screen adaptations of the original Resident Evil game series, as they focus heavily on action, rather than the tense, horror-driven atmosphere that made the games popular in the first place.
Zack Cregger, known for ‘Weapons’ and ‘Barbarian,’ is leading a new reboot with a different approach. The story centers on a virus outbreak in a remote hospital, following an ordinary courier caught in the ordeal.
With his highly successful background in horror filmmaking, Cregger is expected to focus more on fear, giving fans a version that finally captures that signature sense of dread and isolation.
2. The Mummy (April, 2026)

Brendan Fraser’s ‘The Mummy‘ has become a fan favourite, gaining cult status over the years, thanks to its mix of adventure, humor, and light horror. But, honestly, it leaned more toward fun spectacle than real jump scares.
Lee Cronin, though, known for ‘Evil Dead: Rise‘, is apparently taking the story towards a much darker direction. As per the new reports, his version focuses more on fear, ancient curses, and a family caught in something truly disturbing.
The film stars Jack Reynor and May Calamawy, with James Wan involved as a producer. With Cronin promising something very different from past versions, this new take could very well move beyond nostalgia and deliver a genuinely frightening story.
1. Masters of the Universe (June, 2025)

The 1987 ‘Masters of the Universe‘ was fun in its own way, but it often felt more like a toy-driven project than a fully realized fantasy world. It had charm, but it never truly captured the scale of Eternia.
After almost 4 decades, Travis Knight is now bringing a new version with a bigger vision. This reboot follows Prince Adam, also known as He-Man, as he arrives on Earth and has to adjust to a completely different world. Early footage shows detailed effects for characters like Skeletor and locations such as Castle Grayskull, along with bigger battles.
With a larger budget and a more modern approach, this version has the chance to feel more epic and emotionally grounded than the original.
