‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ was not only the highest-grossing film for the year 2022 but a fitting tribute to King T’Challa. The film collected $790 million worldwide standing tall in the top 10 list of the highest-grossing films of 2022. The first film ‘Black Panther’ set a cultural restoration with all the Black characters and embraced the Black culture and heritage. Chadwick Boseman helmed the first film, but unfortunately, he died due to cancer in 2020.
There was a lot of chatter about whether the MCU will go ahead with the sequel because the preparation of the sequel already began. The story revolved around Chadwick Boseman’s life before he became King T’Challa. But, the sudden demise led to a change in the entire script and narrative of the film. In 2021, the studio green-lit the title and Coogler brought us the sequel in November 2022. The story we witnessed dealt with the agony of the demise and grief of the king while there is a threat from other countries including a danger from Namor. However, Ryan envisioned the original story which was equally heart-touching.

Ryan Coogler Wanted A Father-Son Narrative For ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’
It was a difficult job resurrecting the Wakanda world in the absence of King T’Challa on celluloid. But, the director took the mammoth task on his shoulder along with a team of some of the brilliant talents in the industry. ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ introduces us to the news that T’Challa is no more after Shuri (Letitia Wright) attempts to create a herb to heal him. Grief looms over Wakanda with the death of the king.
Each character along with Ramonda (Angela Bassett) grieves the death of her son, but there is a new threat looming over the kingdom due to Vibranium. The film introduces us to RiRi Williams aka Ironheart, who devises the Vibranium detector that America uses to detect it in the ocean disturbing Namor’s cohort and leading to a war.
But, Ryan Coogler had a completely different vision for the story of T’Challa, equally heart-warming at that. He wanted to continue the tale with Challa’s son Toussaint. Due to his duties, King T’Challa could not spend time with his son, so one summer they took off into the wild.
He shared the story with The New York Times, where Coogler said, “It was, “What are we going to do about the Blip?” That was the challenge. It was absolutely nothing like what we made. It was going to be a father-son story from the perspective of a father because the first movie had been a father-son story from the perspective of the sons”.

He Wanted It To Be About The Summer Time That The Father And Son Spend
In the post-credit sequence of the second installment, when Shuri, after the war, goes to Haiti to burn the funeral clothes to heed her mother’s wish. There, she meets Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and the hidden son, which they were to co-parent. Touissant introduces himself as T’Challa.
The director continued, “In the script, T’Challa was a dad who’d had this forced five-year absence from his son’s life. The first scene was an animated sequence. You hear Nakia talking to Toussaint”.
Ryan wanted it to be a summer story and the time that Toussaint spends with his father. He revealed, “Then it cuts ahead three years and he’s essentially co-parenting. We had some good scenes in there for Chad, man”.
He continued, “Our code name for the movie was ‘Summer Break’, and the movie was about a summer that the kid spends with his dad. For his eighth birthday, they do a ritual where they go out into the bush and have to live off the land. But something happens and T’Challa has to go save the world with his son on his hip. That was the movie”.
