‘Marty Supreme‘ almost ended with a scene that viewers never got to watch. The final version of the film stops where Marty’s younger story ends, but that wasn’t always the plan.
A deleted alternate ending was once part of the movie and came very close to being filmed. That missing scene has now been talked about by both Timothée Chalamet and director Josh Safdie, which has given fans a better idea of what the ending could have looked like.
The Alternate Ending of ‘Marty Supreme’ Is Very Different

‘Marty Supreme‘ was first written with a future-set ending in place. Director Josh Safdie confirmed that the story was meant to jump ahead to the 1980s. But eventually, the decision was made to cut it. Safdie, who also edited the film and co-wrote it with Ronald Bronstein, said the idea was to show Marty Mauser many years after his younger days.

The scene was designed to play during the end credits and give viewers a look at where Marty ended up. The film itself shows Marty as an ambitious young man from New York City’s Lower East Side in the 1950s who wants to become a ping pong star. While the final version stays fully in that time period, the original plan was to briefly step outside it at the very end.
Why The Scene Was Deleted

The cut ending would have shown Marty as an older man in the 1980s. In that scene, he would attend a concert with his granddaughter, jumping forward in time. Safdie said the idea came from his strong interest in ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World‘ by Tears for Fears. He explained that he kept playing, and it felt like the right match for the character.

As the song played at the concert, Marty would think back on his younger years. The moment was meant to connect the song’s lyrics to Marty’s need to win. In a separate interview, Timothée Chalamet confirmed that the original ending was close to being filmed.
The scene was planned to run over the credits and help show what Marty’s future might have looked like. Chalamet shared that the scene was dropped because the production ran out of time. You’ll be surprised to know that he had already spent about six hours in prosthetic makeup to make him look about thirty years older. He said it was disappointing that the scene never happened, especially since the makeup was already made and applied.
Everything was ready, but the moment was never shot. While audiences never got that final look at his later life, we at least got a chance to see how it would have ended.
