It Ends With Us‘ has been making headlines for quite a while now. The film was already a major source of discussion because of its adaptation and casting. However, Blake Lively’s style of promotion wasn’t appreciated by many who called her out for being tone-deaf and ignoring the film’s central, serious themes.

Lively showed up in gorgeous floral dresses to promote the film and even sneaked in a reference to her new hair care brand in between. But as fans pointed out, she did not, in fact, discuss or refer to the underlying issues that the book tried to explore, including issues of domestic violence and physical abuse.

This was highly contrasted by Justin Baldoni’s style of promoting the film, who constantly brought up the issues the movie was trying to discuss. “The message is the most important thing. That’s why [Colleen] wrote the book,” Baldoni told Today.

“I was always thinking about the outcome and the why, and the one woman I was making this for who would sit in that theater and maybe not go back to her abusive relationship,” she said.

In another CBS interview, he said, “The question that’s always asked is, ‘Why did she stay?’ That’s the wrong question. What we need to be asking ourselves is, ‘Why do men harm?’ It was not an easy story to tell, and yet it was profoundly important. I’ve learned so much.”

Fans called Blake Lively out on social media for her wrongly positive attitude towards the film and for not promoting it accurately. Many talked about how she used the film’s promo events as a chance to promote her own hair care brand and her brand of drinks – Betty Booze.

One fan wrote about how Blake is promoting the film as if it were a romantic comedy, instead of a serious film about domestic violence.

Another fan wrote about how she promoted her hair care brand in the middle of the movie promotions.

More fans called her out for promoting the film as if it were a romantic comedy.

Blake Lively has not yet responded to the backlash. ‘It Ends With Us’ is available to watch in theatres now.
