10 Behind-the-Scenes Secrets of ‘The Godfather’

Story by Rishita Roy Chowdhury • 4 weeks ago
Paramount Did Not Want Marlon Brando As Vito Corleone

Paramount Did Not Want Marlon Brando As Vito Corleone

At first, Paramount Pictures strongly opposed casting Marlon Brando in The Godfather. Studio executives believed Brando was difficult to manage and no longer reliable at the box office. They preferred famous actors like Laurence Olivier for the role of Vito Corleone. However, Francis Ford Coppola remained determined to cast Brando. To convince the studio, Coppola secretly filmed a screen test while pretending it was only a makeup experiment. Brando transformed himself by changing his voice and placing tissues inside his cheeks to create the character’s look.

Al Pacino Was Not The Studio’s First Choice Either

Al Pacino Was Not The Studio’s First Choice Either

Although Al Pacino became unforgettable as Michael Corleone in The Godfather, Paramount Pictures originally wanted bigger stars for the role. The studio preferred actors like Robert Redford or Ryan O’Neal because they were already well known and considered safer choices. However, Francis Ford Coppola strongly believed Pacino was perfect for the character. Many actors, including Martin Sheen and James Caan, auditioned for Michael before the final decision was made.

Diane Keaton Was Cast For Her Unusual Personality

Diane Keaton Was Cast For Her Unusual Personality

Diane Keaton was not the obvious choice to play Kay Adams in The Godfather. Director Francis Ford Coppola felt the character could easily come across as plain and forgettable. He wanted someone who could bring energy and charm to the role. Coppola believed Keaton had a naturally quirky and interesting personality that made her stand out from other actresses. Her slightly awkward and eccentric style gave Kay more depth and realism.

Francis Ford Coppola Almost Lost His Job

While working on 'The Godfather', director Francis Ford Coppola faced constant pressure from Paramount Pictures. The studio did not like the dark and slow style of the movie he was making. Executives wanted a more exciting and violent gangster film with faster pacing. Because of this, Coppola was repeatedly warned that he could be removed from the project. Reports even claimed that replacement directors were kept ready on set while filming continued.

Robert De Niro Auditioned For Sonny Corleone

Before becoming part of the The Godfather universe, Robert De Niro auditioned for the role of Sonny Corleone. Director Francis Ford Coppola eventually chose James Caan for the role because he felt Caan better matched Sonny’s loud and explosive personality. Even though De Niro did not get the part, Coppola clearly remembered his talent. A few years later, De Niro returned to the franchise in The Godfather Part II as the young Vito Corleone.

The Wedding Scene Was Shot In A Very Natural Way

The Wedding Scene Was Shot In A Very Natural Way

The famous opening wedding sequence in The Godfather felt so real because Francis Ford Coppola encouraged the actors to behave naturally during filming. Since he only had two days to shoot the large scene, Coppola allowed the cast and extras to improvise many background moments instead of carefully planning every action. People danced, laughed, talked, and celebrated freely just like guests at a real Italian American wedding. Coppola then filmed smaller story moments within the chaos of the party.

A Mistake Turned Into A Memorable Scene

Lenny Montana, who played Luca Brasi in The Godfather, struggled badly while filming scenes with Marlon Brando. Montana had been a professional wrestler before acting, and he became extremely nervous performing in front of a legendary actor like Brando. He kept forgetting his lines and could not deliver a smooth performance. Instead of reshooting the scene, director Francis Ford Coppola cleverly used the mistake to improve the character.

The Corleone Mansion Was A Real Home

The Corleone Mansion Was A Real Home

The famous Corleone family compound seen in The Godfather was not a movie set built in a studio. It was an actual private home located on Staten Island in New York. The large property perfectly matched the powerful image of the Corleone family and became one of the film’s most recognizable locations. Years after the movie’s release, the house became a major attraction for fans of the classic gangster film. In 2014, the property was even listed for sale for nearly $3 million.

The Cat In The Movie Was Completely Random

The Cat In The Movie Was Completely Random

One of the most famous details in The Godfather was never planned in advance. While walking around the set, Francis Ford Coppola found a stray cat and decided to use it during filming. He handed the cat to Marlon Brando during the opening scene in Vito Corleone’s office and asked him to improvise. Surprisingly, the cat stayed calm in Brando’s lap throughout filming and even purred loudly during the takes.

The Cannoli Line Was Added At The Last Minute

The Cannoli Line Was Added At The Last Minute

The famous line “Leave the gun, take the cannoli” from The Godfather was partly improvised during filming. In the original script, Clemenza was only supposed to say “Leave the gun” after the mob hit scene. Earlier in the movie, the character’s wife had reminded him to bring home cannoli for dessert. Actor Richard Castellano remembered that small detail while filming and decided to add the extra line himself.
