10 Marvel Characters Who Did Not Do Justice To Comics
10. Apocalypse (X-Men: Apocalypse, 2016)
The comic book depiction of En Sabah Nur is a terrifying, god-like mutant powerhouse whose immense size and ancient bio-mechanical armor make him the source of absolute dread. However, the live-action version took everything scary out of him. It depicted him as a weak, regular-sized villain wearing silly blue makeup that looked more like Power Rangers armor than something worthy of causing the end of the world. Oscar Isaac did what he could with such weak material, but there is simply nothing interesting for him to do other than give some lackluster speeches about total destruction.
9. Rogue (X-Men Trilogy, 2000-2006)
In the comics, Rogue is a powerful, intimidating powerhouse of a mutant with a giant personality and the ability to fly. She is a feisty Southern belle who can handle even the mightiest enemies in the Marvel universe. In the 'X-Men' trilogy, however, she was stripped down to being a meek, perpetually distressed runaway girl used solely for moving the plot forward. Anna Paquin did justice to this portrayal, but comic book fans never had the chance to experience Rogue's exceptional power and confidence.
8. Malekith (Thor: The Dark World, 2013)
The original incarnation of Malekith the Cruel is an eccentrically wild, frighteningly charismatic dark elf king. This villain is responsible for bringing chaos and glee with his warlike nature and love for sadistically slaughtering innocent civilians. However, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all these characteristics have been flattened and toned down, resulting in a dull antagonist who wants to plunge the universe into eternal darkness just because. Christopher Eccleston had a wasted opportunity to play an extremely intriguing villain.
7. Taskmaster (Black Widow, 2021)
Tony Masters is a famous comic villain and skilled mercenary with an impressive skill set, including mimicking the exact combat techniques of his opponents. Instead of bringing him to life in 'Black Widow,' Marvel made him a completely distinct character, stripping him of his speech and will. He has become a silent, brainwashed cyborg who can do nothing except follow the instructions from the implanted control chip. Changing an exciting anti-hero into a tragic side-character is a huge mistake.
6. Doctor Doom (Fantastic Four, 2015)
Victor von Doom is arguably one of the greatest comic book villains in Marvel history. He is a smart, arrogant, and ambitious monarch who combines scientific knowledge with black magic and conquers his very own sovereign territory. But 'Fantastic Four' 2015 reboot killed everything that made this character so iconic and great, turning him into a grumpy computer programmer fused with green space trash. There is not a hint of royal grandeur here–Doctor Doom has turned into some bizarre monster.
5. Galactus (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, 2007)
Galactus is one of Marvel Comics' most terrifying and iconic entities. He is a massive, terrifying creature with powerful purple armor that resembles an alien. In 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,' the filmmakers made a terrible decision to present the character as a giant, sentient space cloud that leaves dark shadows on planets. It robs the whole concept of its horror value and visual appeal, making it look ridiculous and utterly pointless.
4. Gorr the God Butcher (Thor: Love and Thunder, 2022)
Gorr is a terrifyingly alien-looking villain who believes in a depressing and heart-wrenching philosophy that makes him wage a crusade against all gods. Christian Bale does amazing work in portraying such a character in 'Thor: Love and Thunder.' But the filmmakers have seriously held him back, showing little to none of his god-slaying activities. The viewers get a watered-down villain without any real impact, who wastes too much time kidnapping children instead of doing his god-slaying.
3. Venom (Spider-Man 3, 2007)
Venom in the comics is a terrifyingly massive and muscular creature filled with alien rage and hatred towards Spider-Man. The combination of his terrifying appearance and Eddie Brock's intense hatred makes him one of the biggest threats. Topher Grace fails miserably to portray this monstrous entity since his appearance and physique contradict his personality and actions. 'Spider-Man 3' has also rushed the origin story of the character.
2. Deadpool (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 2009)
This comic book anti-hero is famous for his witty, humorous fourth-wall breaking comments and chaotic nature. His portrayal in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' is considered one of the biggest mistakes in cinema because of the decision to sew Wade's mouth shut during the last confrontation. Not only did it deprive him of his most prominent features, but it also added many random and poorly written mutant abilities. While fans ultimately loved the superhero in his solo franchise, this version didn't sit well with them.
1. The Mandarin (Iron Man 3, 2013)
In the comic books, Iron Man's arch-nemesis is a brilliant and cruel villain who possesses alien rings with tremendous powers. The Mandarin perfectly matches Iron Man with his philosophy, making him a perfect opponent to Tony Stark. 'Iron Man 3' built expectations for a terrifying, menacing terrorist leader, who turned out to be nothing but a washed-out British actor named Trevor Slattery. The reveal was shocking and funny, but it was a terrible waste of decades of comic book history.
