10 Movie Monologues We’ll Never Forget
The Devil’s Advocate (1997)
Al Pacino clearly has fun playing the Devil in The Devil’s Advocate, especially during his big speech near the end. When his character starts talking about God and human nature, he completely owns the scene. At one point he says, “Who are you carrying all those bricks for anyway? God? Is that it? God? Well, let me give you a little inside information about God… God likes to watch. He’s a prankster.” It’s bold, over-the-top, and exactly the kind of speech that makes the movie so entertaining.
Jaws (1975)
There’s a scene in Jaws where the characters sit on a boat, sharing stories. Then Quint starts talking about his past, and the mood suddenly shifts. He recalls the night the USS Indianapolis sank during World War II and how the survivors were left in shark-infested waters. Robert Shaw delivers the story in a way that makes it even more chilling. As Quint recalls, “Eleven hundred men went into the water. Three hundred sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest… June the 29th, 1945.”
A Few Good Men (1992)
If you’ve seen A Few Good Men, you probably remember the courtroom scene where Colonel Jessup finally snaps. Tom Cruise’s character keeps pushing him for the truth, and Jessup responds with one of the most famous speeches in movie history. Jack Nicholson completely takes over the scene when he shouts, “You can’t handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns.” The speech continues as he defends the harsh realities of military life. It’s intense, dramatic, and still one of the most quoted movie moments ever.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
One of the best moments in The Devil Wears Prada comes when Miranda Priestly shuts down Andy’s belief that fashion doesn’t matter. Andy sees the industry as shallow, but Miranda quickly proves otherwise. She points at Andy’s sweater and explains exactly how the fashion world shapes everyday choices. As she puts it, “This ‘stuff’? Oh, okay. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you… you go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater… but what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue… it’s actually cerulean.” In one speech, Miranda shows exactly why she runs the room.
Gone Girl (2014)
Rosamund Pike delivers one of the most chilling monologues in Gone Girl through Amy Dunne’s calm, calculated voice-over. As the audience begins to understand her elaborate plan, Amy coldly reflects on her marriage and the revenge she has carefully orchestrated. In a moment of brutal honesty, she declares, “Nick Dunne took my pride and my dignity and my hope and my money. He took and took from me until I no longer existed. That’s murder.”
Taken (2008)
One of the most iconic moments in modern action cinema comes in Taken when Bryan Mills speaks to the men who kidnapped his daughter. Instead of reacting with panic, Liam Neeson’s character delivers a chilling warning over the phone: “If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you.” The threat escalates quickly as he adds, “But if you don’t… I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction is packed with unforgettable dialogue, but Samuel L. Jackson’s delivery of Jules Winnfield’s speech stands above the rest. Good Will Hunting (1997)
