10 Things You Never Knew About ‘Legally Blonde’
The “Bend and Snap” Was Created in a Drunken Brainstorm
One of the most famous moments in Legally Blonde almost never existed. Writers Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith reportedly invented the “bend and snap” scene during a late-night drunken brainstorming session at a bar. Producers wanted a memorable comedic moment for Jennifer Coolidge’s character Paulette, but they had not figured out what it should be. Eventually, the writers came up with Elle teaching Paulette a ridiculous flirting technique to impress the UPS delivery man.
The Toilet Paper Vote Was Based on Real Sorority Drama
One hilarious scene in Legally Blonde shows Delta Nu members passionately voting against switching from Charmin toilet paper to a cheaper generic brand. As ridiculous as it sounds, the moment was inspired by real events. Cowriter Karen McCullah revealed the scene came from her own sorority experiences at James Madison University. According to McCullah, her sorority once lost access to their preferred toilet paper, leading her to encourage sisters to steal replacement rolls from campus buildings.
Warner’s Final Humiliation Wasn’t in the Original Cut
Another scene added because of test audiences involved Elle confronting Warner after winning her court case. Viewers apparently wanted to see her finally get the last word against the boyfriend who doubted her from the beginning. Producers agreed, so the confrontation scene was filmed later in London while Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Davis were already working on other movies there. The additional moment ended up strengthening Elle’s character arc because it showed she no longer needed Warner’s approval.
Matthew Davis Also Developed a Crush on Selma Blair
Apparently, Matthew Davis did not only admire Reese Witherspoon during filming. He later admitted he also developed feelings for Selma Blair, who played Vivian Kensington. Davis described Blair as someone he absolutely adored while working together on Legally Blonde. However, Blair was dating Jason Schwartzman at the time, leaving Davis jealous whenever the actor visited the set. The behind-the-scenes crushes make the movie’s romantic tension even funnier in hindsight.
The Graduation Scene Was Added Later
Originally, Legally Blonde ended right after Elle won the courtroom case. However, test audiences wanted to know what happened next and demanded a more satisfying ending. As a result, filmmakers added the memorable graduation scene showing Elle’s successful future. There was just one problem: Reese Witherspoon had already cut her hair short for The Importance of Being Earnest, while Luke Wilson had shaved his head for The Royal Tenenbaums.
Reese Found Elle’s Energy Difficult to Play
Even though Reese Witherspoon made Elle Woods seem effortless, she later admitted the role was surprisingly challenging. Witherspoon explained that she is naturally much calmer and quieter than Elle, making the character’s bubbly energy difficult to maintain throughout filming. She especially struggled with portraying how passionately Elle approached every little detail in life. However, that challenge may have helped make the performance feel genuine instead of exaggerated.
Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair Were Neighbors
During filming, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair actually lived across the street from each other. The actresses became even closer while working on Legally Blonde, often hanging out between shoots. Witherspoon once revealed that Blair even kept a spare key to her house in case she accidentally got locked out. The friendship helped strengthen their onscreen chemistry, especially as Elle and Vivian slowly transformed from rivals into supportive friends.
Elle’s Signature Pink Color Was Carefully Planned
Elle Woods’ obsession with pink was not random at all. Costume designer Sophie de Rakoff explained that she and Reese Witherspoon visited real sorority houses while preparing for the movie. During those visits, they realized pink perfectly represented Elle’s personality and the world she came from. The filmmakers then intentionally used pink throughout the movie to visually separate Elle from the darker, more serious atmosphere of Harvard Law School.
Elle’s LSAT Score Was Basically Genius Level
One detail many viewers overlook is just how brilliant Elle Woods actually is. In Legally Blonde, Elle scores an incredible 179 on the LSAT exam. That places her in roughly the top 0.1 percent of all test takers. The score is especially impressive because the LSAT is considered one of the toughest exams for aspiring law students. While people around her constantly underestimate her because of her appearance and bubbly personality, the film quietly proves she is academically exceptional.
Ariana Grande Paid Tribute to Legally Blonde
Ariana Grande paid tribute to Legally Blonde in her massively popular “Thank U, Next” music video released in 2018. Grande recreated several iconic moments from the film, including Elle Woods relaxing by the pool in a pink bikini. The music video also referenced other beloved early-2000s movies like Mean Girls and 13 Going on 30. Fans loved the nostalgic tribute, and it introduced Legally Blonde to a younger generation that may not have grown up with the original movie.
