Hollywood Stars Who Almost Lost Their Lives Filming On Set
George Clooney
Not every life-threatening injury comes from explosions or stunts. For George Clooney on Syriana (2005), it was a brutal beating scene gone wrong. Tied to a chair that tipped over, Clooney’s head injury caused brain trauma so severe it left him with spinal fluid leaks and chronic migraines. The pain was so intense, Clooney admitted he considered ending his life.
Halle Berry
It only takes one wrong move for a fight scene to turn deadly, and Halle Berry learned that the hard way on the set of The Call (2013). While filming an intense struggle, Berry’s head slammed against the concrete floor, leaving the Oscar winner completely unconscious. For a few terrifying minutes, cast and crew feared the worst. Luckily, she bounced back after medical attention.
Tom Hanks
You’d think surviving on a deserted island for Cast Away was all movie magic but Tom Hanks’ biggest threat came from something ridiculously small. A cut on his leg turned into a staph infection so severe it nearly killed him. Hanks was rushed to the hospital and spent three days hooked up while doctors battled the infection. Left untreated, it could’ve been fatal.
Gerard Butler
When Gerard Butler signed on to star in the surfing drama Chasing Mavericks (2012), he probably didn’t expect to actually need saving himself. But while shooting in California’s notoriously dangerous waves, Butler was swallowed by the ocean and pinned underwater. The powerful surf dragged him for what felt like forever before rescuers managed to pull him back to safety.
Elisabeth Sladen
Back in the golden age of Doctor Who, Elisabeth Sladen, aka the unforgettable Sarah Jane Smith, faced a terrifying moment during the 1975 serial Revenge of the Cybermen. A boat she was steering lost control and veered into a whirlpool, forcing Sladen to leap into the water. The situation could have turned deadly if not for stuntman Terry Walsh, who dove in and pulled her to safety.
Tom Cruise
Emily Blunt once admitted she nearly turned an action scene into a real-life disaster, with Tom Cruise as the victim. While filming a high-speed chase for Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Blunt misjudged a turn and slammed the car straight into a tree. Sitting beside her, Cruise could be heard muttering “brake, brake, brake” before impact.
John Hurt
Transformations can be breathtaking on screen, but for John Hurt in The Elephant Man (1980), it was almost his undoing. Buried under layers of heavy prosthetics to play Joseph Merrick, Hurt had strict instructions to remain upright to avoid suffocating. The problem is that he kept forgetting. The actor admitted there were several close calls where he nearly blacked out while filming.
Jason Statham
Not all action stars are lucky enough to walk away from their stunts but Jason Statham barely did. While filming The Expendables 3 (2014), he was behind the wheel of a three-ton truck when the brakes failed. The vehicle barreled toward the Black Sea, and Statham had only seconds to react. His only choice was to leap out of the moving truck before it plunged into the water.
Daniel Day-Lewis
Method acting has made Daniel Day-Lewis a legend but it almost made him a ghost. On Gangs of New York (2002), he refused to wear any modern clothing under his 19th-century costume, even in brutal weather. That dedication led to full-blown pneumonia. To make things worse, he initially refused modern medicine because it didn’t exist in his character’s time.
Bob Denver
Life on Gilligan’s Island was meant to be slapstick fun, but star Bob Denver found himself in a nightmare scenario. While filming a scene, he was trapped in a hut with a live lion, yes, a real lion, when the animal pounced. For a horrifying moment, Denver’s fate looked sealed. But by sheer luck, the bed the lion was standing on broke, distracting the animal long enough for its trainer to intervene.
Kristin Chenoweth
Kristin Chenoweth’s debut on The Good Wife almost ended in tragedy before it even began. On her very first day of filming in 2013, a massive lighting rig fell directly onto her. The impact fractured her skull, broke her nose, cracked her teeth, and left her with spine and rib injuries. Rushed to the hospital, Chenoweth spent weeks recovering and ultimately chose not to return as a full-time cast member.
Lorenza Izzo
Some screams on horror movie sets are fake, Lorenza Izzo’s were anything but. While filming Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno (2013), she shot an escape scene in a raging river. But the current carried her away, and the crew initially thought her frantic cries for help were just acting. It took a terrifying few minutes before they realized she was actually drowning.
Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence’s near-death moment wasn’t from Hunger Games arena battles, it was from faulty special effects. On the set of Mockingjay Part 1 (2012), she was sprinting through a tunnel when a fog machine went haywire. The smoke became so thick that Lawrence couldn’t breathe, nearly suffocating before escaping the set.
Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp’s close call came courtesy of a horse with no interest in movie schedules. While filming The Lone Ranger (2013), Depp was thrown off mid-scene, landing hard as the animal reared up. For a terrifying moment, the horse nearly trampled him. Depp later joked that he saw hooves flashing inches from his face, but what could’ve been a fatal accident.
Matthew Fox
Lost fans remember the emotional finale in 2010, but what they don’t know is Matthew Fox nearly didn’t survive filming it. In a fight scene, a real knife accidentally replaced the retractable one meant for safety. Fox was supposed to be “stabbed” on screen but with the mix-up, he could’ve actually been impaled.
Dylan O’Brien
Stunts are all fun and games until they go horribly wrong, which Dylan O’Brien knows too well. While filming Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2016), a scene required him to leap from one moving vehicle to another. Instead, he was dragged underneath, suffering fractures to his face and skull. His injuries were so severe that production shut down for a year. Fans had to wait, but O’Brien’s recovery was the real miracle.
Brendan Fraser
Brendan Fraser gave his all in The Mummy (1999), but one scene nearly cost him everything. Filming a hanging sequence went so wrong that Fraser actually stopped breathing. Co-star Rachel Weisz recalled the terrifying moment when Fraser had to be resuscitated after losing consciousness. Ironically, the man battling mummies on screen was almost killed by a simple rope trick gone wrong.
Isla Fisher
Magic tricks can be deadly. Just ask Isla Fisher. On the set of Now You See Me (2013), she filmed an underwater escape scene that turned frighteningly real. Her chains got stuck, trapping her in the tank as she struggled for air. For three minutes, castmates thought her thrashing was “method acting,” until someone realized she was genuinely drowning.
Jim Caviezel
Playing Jesus Christ in The Passion of the Christ (2004) wasn’t just emotionally grueling; it was physically brutal. Jim Caviezel endured pneumonia, hypothermia, and a lung infection from the harsh conditions. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, he was struck by lightning while filming the Sermon on the Mount.
Jackie Chan
Jackie Chan’s resume is full of insane stunts, but one of his most dangerous came in Police Story (1985). The climax required him to slide down a massive pole inside a mall. What audiences didn’t know is that the stunt left him with two fractured vertebrae, a dislocated pelvis, and severe burns to his hands. Chan somehow finished the scene, but the accident remains one of the most infamous injuries in action movie history.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt Premium Rush (2012)
Bikes and taxis are never a good mix, something Joseph Gordon-Levitt learned while filming Premium Rush (2012). In one take, he lost control and slammed straight into a cab. The crash was so bad he needed over 30 stitches to his arm. Instead of quitting, Gordon-Levitt wore the scar like a badge of honor.
Dominic Purcell
Prison breaks are dangerous onscreen and off. While shooting the revival of Prison Break in 2016, Dominic Purcell was struck on the head when an iron bar fell from above. The blow shattered his nose and left him needing 150 stitches. Despite the brutal injuries, Purcell later joked about it on Instagram.
Craig Charles
Comedy and sci-fi collided dangerously for Craig Charles on Red Dwarf (1989). Shooting an underwater sequence, he stuffed weights into his pockets so he wouldn’t float. But when his foot got stuck, he was pinned beneath the surface. Rescue teams spotted him just in time, pulling him out before tragedy struck.
Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone wanted realism in Rocky IV (1985), so he told co-star Dolph Lundgren to actually hit him. Bad idea. Lundgren delivered a punch so powerful it smashed Stallone’s ribcage into his chest, compressing his heart. Stallone ended up in intensive care for nine days with a swollen pericardial sac. He survived, but the story proved “Rocky Balboa” really did go toe-to-toe with death in the ring.
