6 Unscripted ‘Modern Family’ Moments That You Probably Never Knew
Gloria's mispronunciation of words
Gloria’s iconic mispronunciations aren’t limited to a single episode; they’re a recurring highlight throughout Modern Family and mist of them are unscripted. Sofía Vergara delivers a brilliant performance as Gloria Pritchett, easily making her one of the funniest characters on the show. Her unique way of speaking led to some unforgettable moments. From calling “baby Jesus” “baby cheeses” to saying “old tomato” instead of ultimatum, “hair ring” instead of earring, and “doggy dog world” instead of dog-eat-dog world, her list of mispronunciations is endless and endlessly hilarious.
The epic 'Egg Drop' fall
In the Egg Drop episode, Luke works on a school project involving an egg drop experiment. To test the durability of his design, he repeatedly drops eggs from the stairs. During one attempt, he drops a dozen eggs just as Claire happens to walk by. What follows is an unexpected slip-and-fall moment that wasn’t even in the script. Both the creators and Julie Bowen confirmed that Claire was only supposed to slip slightly, but the full fall happened naturally. Bowen later described it as “raw, unadulterated klutziness”.
The trampoline basketball was not scripted
In Season 1, Episode 1, Pilot, Phil and Luke are seen playing basketball in their backyard but with a twist. They’re actually playing trampoline basketball, which appears during the end credits. Interestingly, this entire sequence wasn’t part of the original script. The production team improvised by repositioning the basketball net near the trampoline.
“Gotta Fix That Step” was just a line
One of the show’s most memorable running gags began with a simple accident. In Season 1, Episode 13, The Bicycle Thief, a broken step in the Dunphy household becomes a recurring joke. During filming, Ty Burrell accidentally tripped over the step and spontaneously said, “Gotta fix that step.” The scene became a recurring line in the show. From then on, whenever any family member tripped on the step, they would repeat the phrase.
Mitchell and Cam improvised the car-lock scene
In Season 1, Episode 6, Mitchell and Cam accidentally lock Lily inside the car with the keys still inside. The scripted scene originally ended with Mitchell asking, “Did we just lock her in the car?”. Everything that followed was completely improvised by Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The chaos that unfolds is hilarious; Cam panics and screams in a high-pitched voice, while Mitchell calls 911 trying to stay calm.
Phil actually thought 'WTF?' meant 'Why the Face'
In Season 1, Episode 1, Pilot, Phil Dunphy delivers one of the most iconic and hilarious lines in the series. Trying to prove he’s a “cool dad,” he explains texting slang to his kids and claims that “WTF” means “Why The Face.” The moment was actually unscripted. Interestingly, the line came from Alan Tudyk, who had used it during his audition for Phil. The creators loved it so much that they asked for his permission to include it in the show.
