Maggie is a talented boxer who ends up paralyzed after a cheap shot in the ring. She begs her trainer Frankie to put her out of her misery. He finally agrees and gives her a lethal injection, then vanishes. The movie ends on a quiet feeling of loss. Her dreams are gone, her bond with Frankie is broken, and the hard truth is that some fights just cannot be won.

A couple's weekend away becomes a nightmare when a group of feral young people torture them. Starving siblings Seita and Setsuko try to survive the horrors of wartime Japan. Setsuko dies in her brother's arms after a painful decline. Seita soon after dies alone at a train station. Their spirits come back together among fireflies and look down on a modern, wealthy Japan that does not care. The film shows how war ignores the innocent. The suffering of these two children is meaningless, and their deaths are forgotten. It is a haunting and final kind of sadness.
