10 ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Storylines That Tested Our Patience

Story by Rishita Roy Chowdhury • 2 months ago
Alaric and Caroline’s Engagement (Season 7)

Alaric and Caroline’s Engagement (Season 7)

This was one of the show's most-hated events ever. While we understood Caroline’s love for the twins, seeing her get engaged to her former teacher and her best friend’s father-figure was just uncomfortable. The lack of romantic chemistry made their domestic life in Season 7 feel like a forced plot point that we all just wanted to fast-forward through.

Lily Salvatore and the Heretics (Season 7)

Lily Salvatore and the Heretics (Season 7)

Bringing the mother of the Salvatore brothers back from a 1903 Prison World sounded great at first, but the execution was a total drag. Lily seemed more invested in her "found" family of Heretics than her own sons, which made her hard to root for. The Heretics themselves never quite lived up to their hype as world-ending hybrid threats. Their presence made the seventh season feel uncomfortably aimless.

The Sirens and Cade (Season 8)

The Sirens and Cade (Season 8)

By the last season, 'The Vampire Diaries' dove deep into hell and brimstone, but the storyline of Sybil and Seline felt like it belonged in a different series. The Sirens were often more annoying than scary, and introducing the Devil (Cade) only worsened things. It took a lot of patience to sit through the mind-control antics of these villains before finally getting to the series finale.

The Search for the Cure (Season 4)

The Search for the Cure (Season 4)

This multi-season scavenger hunt for the cure got on the nerves of many fans. We spent almost all of Season 4 hearing the word "Cure" in every single conversation, only for the reveal to lead to a repetitive cycle of who deserved it more. The climax ultimately sees Elena force Katherine to inject it during their fight at the high school, making the latter human for the first time in 500 years. But by the time it all unfolds, the stakes feel drained because the show dragged the chase for way too long.

Jeremy the Supernatural Hunter (Season 4)

Jeremy the Supernatural Hunter (Season 4)

Jeremy’s journey from the annoying little brother to a legendary member of The Five could have been epic, but it felt mostly like a side-quest. The invisible tattoos and the constant training montages with Damon in Season 4 felt disconnected from the show's central drama. It was hard to take him seriously as a serious threat when he still felt like a kid. With that storyline, he deserved some shining moments of his own.

Markos and the Travelers (Season 5)

Markos and the Travelers (Season 5)

Coming off the heels of Silas and the Originals, the Travelers felt like a major step down for the show when we talk about its villains. The anti-magic agenda of travelers was hard to follow, and their leader, Markos, lacked the terrifying charisma fans saw earlier in Mystic Falls (courtesy of Klaus or even Katherine). This Season 5 arc felt more like a distraction than a genuine threat to our favorite vampires.

The Sleeping Beauty Curse (Seasons 7 & 8)

The Sleeping Beauty Curse (Seasons 7 & 8)

When Nina Dobrev left 'The Vampire Diaries,' the writers linked Elena’s life to Bonnie’s, putting Elena in a magical coffin for years. While it was a clever exit, it didn't work well for the show's last two seasons. The aftermath led to endless scenes of characters talking to a box, which felt like a repetitive holding pattern while we waited for the real reunion. Fans, especially who shipped "Delena," were emotionally done while watching those scenes.

    The Doppelgänger Overload (Season 5)

    The Doppelgänger Overload (Season 5)

We all loved Katherine Pierce and her manipulation, especially in the early seasons. But when the show revealed that Stefan was also a doppelgänger (Silas), fans couldn't help but roll their eyes. Then came the traveler spell in Season 5, claiming that doppelgängers are mystically drawn together. And honestly, the reveal somewhat fell flat compared to the actual love stories we spent years rooting for.

The Quest for the Hunter's Mark (Season 4)

The Quest for the Hunter's Mark (Season 4)

The hunt for the map to Silas was an endurance test for even the show's most loyal fans. Between Jeremy needing to kill vampires to grow his tattoo and everyone betraying each other for a map that was literally on a guy’s body, it felt unnecessarily complex. It turned a character-driven show into a complicated puzzle with no major storyline moving parallelly.

The Elena and Damon Sire Bond (Season 4)

The Elena and Damon Sire Bond (Season 4)

Nothing tested our patience quite like the Season 4 sire bond reveal. After years of build-up, having Elena’s feelings for Damon tied to a supernatural compulsion felt like a tight slap in the face. It robbed fans of a genuine romantic payoff and spent half the season wondering whether her love was ever real. This storyline was a total buzzkill for the Delena arc.
