Justin Bieber‘s song ‘Love Yourself’ is a bonafide hit from his album ‘Purpose’. It’s no secret that the song was originally written by Ed Sheeran for his album ‘Divide’.
But why did he give the song to Bieber? Well, Sheeran revealed a funny reason for this. His friends thought that the track was just “meh”, so he gave it to Bieber to work with.
“I Played It To People And They Went, Meh”: Ed Sheeran On Giving The Song To Bieber
The ‘I Don’t Care’ singer, Sheeran joked about how his friends found the song to be underwhelming and the same song later topped the charts for Justin Bieber. While talking at Hard Rock Live in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Hollywood, Sheeran said, “I was writing a lot of songs about a lot of different things, and I wrote this song and honestly, I played it to people and they went, ‘Meh’.”
Ed then later said that he played the song for Justin and he was ready to work with it. Ed said, “I went, ‘Cool, have it’, and then it got very big.”
The song ‘Love Yourself’ topped the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Chart in 2016, making Bieber the youngest artist to have a NO1 single in the rankings in the publication’s history. Ed continued that his friends questioned him why he gave the song to him in the first place. To which Ed replied, “You told me it wasn’t good.”

Ed And Bieber Collaborated For ‘I Don’t Care’
Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber also collaborated on a song called ‘I Don’t Care‘. The song was a hit but apart from that what caught the attention of the audience was the music video.
The single is the second collaboration between the superstar pop pairing – the two previously co-wrote Bieber’s 2015 hit ‘Love Yourself.’ The pair makes a great team and it seems they have lots of fun while making the songs.
‘Love Yourself’ was aimed at a lot of exes of Bieber. People connected the lyrics with Selena Gomes; his girlfriend for a very long time. The lyrics go by, “My momma don’t like you / And she likes everyone.” But it’s still not clear to which of the exes of Bieber the lyrics belong.
