Much of Taylor Swift‘s discography is dominated by a genre of tragic songs. Ranging from recounts of failed romances and the consequences of it, to personal songs about the pop star’s struggle in life and in industry, her lyricism has always been deeply poetic and intimate, earning her the tag of being one of the best songwriters of the century.
With her latest addition of ‘The Tortured Poets Department‘ to this genre, fans have started pointing out various instances of her music which might allude to signs of someone needing therapy, or just in general requiring something close to professional help. Here’s what Swift has said about this in the past, and what parts of her music has made fans feel this way.
Fans Are Concerned Taylor Swift Might Need Therapy
In Taylor Swift’s defence, she has always written sad music and none of it differentiates her from the other artists in the industry who have constantly put out deeply personal songs with lyricism that resonated with a big crowd of fans.
Conversations about Swift needing or taking therapy had started when she put out the re recorded version of ‘Red‘ which had the vault track ‘Forever Winter’, written about her friend Jeff who had died of suicide some time ago. The song’s lyrics were about Swift’s helplessness regarding her friend’s condition and how she longed for him to find the hope he needed to survive.

After that, Swift released ‘Evermore‘ and ‘Folklore‘ that included some of the best songs she has written in her career. These also happen to be the saddest of her songs. Tracks like ‘Tolerate It,’ ‘My Tears Ricochet‘, ‘This Is Me Trying ‘and ‘Mirrorball‘ caught fans’ attention as some of the most intimate songs she has ever written.
Though most of it has been passed off by her as being fictional, it was years after that fans realized a lot if it wasn’t; after drawing parallels between certain lyrics and Swift’s own life. In her documentary ‘Miss Americana‘ she has also admitted to have suffered from eating disorders, another very serious mental disorder that often requires clinical help.

1. Taylor Swift is still at the top of her game.
2. She really needs to go to therapy
After her recent album, however, this conversation resurfaced because of all her incredibly tragic lyrics, some of which fans even labeled as “unhinged“. In one song, ‘I Can Do It With A Broken Heart‘, she sings, “I’m so depressed, I act like it’s my birthday every day / I’m so obsessed with him, but he avoids me like the plague. I cry a lot, but I am so productive, it’s an art / You know you’re good when you can even do it with a broken heart.”
All in all, Swift has a complex discography and issues of mental health have often found a place in her lyricism. Which leads us to the question, has she actually ever taken therapy?

Has Taylor Swift Ever Been To Therapy?
The quick answer to the question is no — not that anyone knows of. In the past, Taylor Swift has often talked about how she deals with her feelings and reaches out for help on her bad days.
In a Rolling Stone interview she said, “No, I’ve never been to therapy. I talk to my mom a lot, because my mom is the one who’s seen everything. God, it takes so long to download somebody on the last 29 years of my life, and my mom has seen it all. She knows exactly where I’m coming from. And we talk endlessly.”
“There were times when I used to have really, really, really bad days where we would just be on the phone for hours and hours and hours. I’d write something that I wanted to say, and instead of posting it, I’d just read it to her,” the pop sensation added.
In another interview with the same publication she had said, “I just feel very sane.” In one of the playlists she had made for promo of ‘Tortured Poets’, she included the five stages of grief — one of them being Depression.
Describing the playlist, she had said, “In times like these, I’ll write a song because I feel lonely or hopeless. And writing a song feels like the only way to process that intensity of an emotion. And while these things are really, really hard to go through, I often feel like when I’m either listening to songs or writing songs that deal with this intensity of loss and hopelessness, usually that’s in the phase where I’m close to getting past that feeling.”
So does Taylor Swift need therapy? Need might be too strong of a word but it’s something that will definitely help her deal with her emotions better. As many have pointed out, she has had a string of failed romances and is found to not be one of the strongest soldiers when it comes to moving on from them. I’m sure she can very well “do it with a broken heart” but someone needs to tell her that she doesn’t really have to.
