Imagine a crazy stalker sending you multiple emails daily and you have a single clue about the person and their intentions. Joe Goldberg, your time is over now. It’s time for Richard Gadd to take over. Well, ‘Baby Reindeer‘ is a show based on the real-life story of Richard Gadd, a Scottish comedian, and his encounter with a stalker.
As the Netflix series is on Gadd’s own experience, the show has multiple characters in it and for obvious reasons, the identity of the real people can’t be revealed. But the viewers of the show became detectives on their own and took the matter into their own hands. This leads to the audience identifying the wrong people and falsely accusing them.

It gets out of control when people try to act violently and cross the boundary to invade someone’s privacy. After watching the series, people started to compare real-life characters to real-life characters. The situation got so worse that the actor of the show himself had to make a post about it and ask them to stop their speculation.
Gadd wrote, “People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly getting caught up in speculation“. He continued, “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real life people could be. That’s not the point of our show.” Richard Gadd posted the following thing on his Instagram account.

The speculations started when in the fourth episode of the series, Richard’s character Doony is groomed and sexually assaulted by a successful writer called Darrien, played by actor Tom Goodman-Hill. People yet again being their smart selves started to connect the character with Foley, and started to point him out on social media.
Jessica Gunning, who plays Martha, also asked the people to stop with their conspiracy theories. During an interview with BBC Scotland’s The Edit, Jessica asked, “If you like the show and you are a fan of it, you should stick with the story of Martha and Donny being what connects you, not trying to do any detective work and find out any real identities“.
