What Is ‘Leave The World Behind’ About?
Based on the novel by Rumaan Alam, the apocalyptic genre movie centers on the Sanford family as they spontaneously travel from Brooklyn to Long Island. Things go on well as they spend time in a beautiful rental home with their happy kids. But not for too long. Two strangers, Ruth Scott (Myha’la) and George (Mahershala Ali), knock on the door and declare they are the property’s owners. They claim there has been a blackout after leaving the city as well. Slowly, as the twists and turns occur, both the families stand together and learn to trust and rely on one another for survival.
The film has received positive reviews from audiences and critics and has been trending for its unsettling ending and fan theories on what it could be. The surprising part, however, is the movie’s relation to Barack Obama and the influence he had on the making of the film.

Barack Obama’s Influence On ‘Leave The World Behind
The Obama Family had a big part to play in contributing to the film, financially and even creatively. Michelle and Barack, were producers for the film through their production house Higher Ground. According to reports, Mr. Obama showed special interest in the film and had a lot of influence in its making, as the director Sam Esmail revealed. He said that the former president helped him by providing notes on the script and helped out the makers when making the original draft.
Esmail said, “I am writing what I think is fiction, for the most part, I’m trying to keep it as true to life as possible, but I’m exaggerating and dramatizing,” he said. “And to hear an ex-president say you’re off by a few details…I thought I was off by a lot! The fact that he said that scared the fuck out of me.”
The director further said, “He had a lot [of] notes about the characters and the empathy we would have for them. I have to say he is a big movie lover, and he wasn’t just giving notes about things that were from his background. He was giving notes as a fan of the book, and he wanted to see a really good film.”
