Ruth Gemmell has handled years of drama, heartbreak, and high-society tension on ‘Bridgerton‘, but nothing quite prepared her for this moment.
The actress recently revealed that filming a steamy scene for the latest season left her so overwhelmed that she “went home and cried,” making it one of the most personal and unexpected experiences of her time on the show.
The Reason Ruth Gemmell Broke Down After Unexpected Steamy Scene Twist

The scene at the centre of it all appears in Season 4, Episode 4 of ‘Bridgerton‘, where Lady Violet shares an intimate moment with Lord Marcus Anderson. For a character who has spent years grieving her late husband, Edmund, this marks a huge emotional change.

But what really shook Gemmell was how she found out. As it turns out, she wasn’t briefed in advance. Instead, it clicked during a costume fitting. “I was a little bit shocked,” she said, recalling how she suddenly realised she was being prepared for something she “had no idea was going to happen.”
That lack of expectation made the moment even harder to process. And what followed next was a deeply emotional response. The actress shared, without hesitation, that she “went home and cried.” It wasn’t just about the scene itself, but the shock of discovering it so suddenly and having to mentally adjust to it.
Given the moment’s sensitivity, the team approached it differently from the show’s younger romances. “Thankfully, we tackled this one in a slightly different way than the kids of the show,” she said, adding with a touch of humor that they relied on “low lighting” to handle it tastefully. Still, she admitted, “I was a bit shocked.”
The Support System That Helped Gemmell Get Through It

Over time, her perspective began to change, though. Gemmell recognized that the storyline carried an important message. “I think it is important,” she said, pointing out that life and emotional connection do not stop with age. For her, the scene became less about discomfort and more about showing a truth that often goes unspoken.

She added that while it’s “very lovely to see young love and love for the first time,” it is just as meaningful to see someone who has “loved and lost and grieved and comes with a myriad of baggage.” That experience, she explained, is something audiences can connect with on a deeper level.
Even though the experience began with tears, Gemmell did not face it alone. She shared that once she knew the scene was happening, fear set in. However, the environment on set quickly helped her regain confidence. She explained that everyone, from costume to hair and makeup, worked together to ensure she felt comfortable.
The involvement of an intimacy coordinator also played a key role in creating a safe and respectful space. Gemmell also spoke warmly about working with Daniel Francis, calling the experience “a treat” and saying it turned into “a real laugh and a bit of a relief” once they got into it.
Francis, however, admitted that he had his own uncomfortable moments, saying that nothing prepares you for stepping onto set with a camera so close or later seeing those scenes on screen.
Even for someone who has been part of the show since the beginning, this was an unfamiliar territory. But we loved every bit of it!
