‘Bridgerton‘ season four ended on a romantic note as Benedict and Sophie shared an intimate moment on the terrace under the night sky. The scene left fans emotional and satisfied, appearing to wrap up their love story in a poetic way that matched the season’s final episode’s tone.
However, the show’s creator has now revealed that the finale almost looked very different. The team originally planned another major moment to close the season that would have dramatically changed how Benedict and Sophie’s story concluded on screen.
‘Bridgerton’ Creator Reveals The Original Season 4 Ending

Showrunner Jess Brownell recently explained that the creative team originally planned a different ending for season four of ‘Bridgerton‘. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she revealed that Benedict and Sophie’s wedding was initially written as part of the official finale.

The early version of the episode placed the wedding directly after the main storyline concluded. That version would have allowed the season to end on the couple’s marriage, giving viewers a traditional fairytale conclusion to their romance.
Brownell explained that the intention behind that idea never changed. “We always knew we wanted our Cinderella figure to get her fairytale wedding,” she said. The wedding scene was always part of the story, but its placement changed during production.
Why The Creators Changed The Ending During Post-Production

The change happened later when Brownell and executive producer Shonda Rhimes reviewed the episode in post-production. During that stage, they felt the emotional ending already carried so much romance that adding the wedding immediately afterward felt overwhelming.

Brownell said the terrace moment between Benedict and Sophie already delivered a strong romantic payoff that the team decided to let that moment stand on its own. Instead of closing the episode with the wedding, the creators moved the ceremony to a post-credits scene.
The decision meant the official ending remained the terrace scene, while the wedding became a bonus moment for viewers who stayed after the credits. Some fans even missed the moment entirely because they stopped watching before the post-credits sequence appeared.
Although the finale changed, the wedding scene still appears at the end of the episode after the credits. The moment shows Sophie walking down the aisle in the gardens of My Cottage as Benedict waits for her. The couple exchanges wedding vows and shares a kiss during the ceremony. The scene then transitions to a painting Benedict has finally completed: a portrait of Sophie that symbolizes her official place in the Bridgerton family.
