Ross Duffer explained that the core of the finale has been known to them for years. “Luckily, it was about six or seven years ago that we knew at least what the final scene is,” he said. “We always knew what the last 40 minutes were going to be.” That revelation is striking. Few series in television history have maintained such consistency in vision over multiple seasons. The Duffers’ long-term storytelling has been one of ‘Stranger Things’ greatest strengths.
Matt Duffer added that writing the final episode came with an emotional toll. “You are having to let go in a way and say goodbye. So we weren’t thinking about that too much when we were writing that final episode. But once we read it through with [the actors], we realized how much it reflected our own experience. And hopefully that emotion that we felt writing it is going to come through to the audience.” It’s clear the finale isn’t just a conclusion for the characters, it’s a goodbye for the cast and creators themselves
