As Netflix prepares to close the doors to Hawkins, Indiana, the creators of ‘Stranger Things’ have revealed that the ending fans are about to witness has been in the making for almost a decade. The series, which first premiered in 2016, became one of Netflix’s defining cultural touchstones.

It will soon reach its long-awaited conclusion, and according to the Duffer Brothers, the emotional finale has been carefully crafted since the show’s earliest days.

During a panel at Italy’s Lucca Comics and Games Festival, creators Matt and Ross Duffer opened up about the process of planning the show’s grand ending. Their reflections confirmed how deeply thought-out Stranger Things has been from the start. It also hints at the emotional weight of saying goodbye to the beloved characters.

Ross Duffer explained that the core of the finale has been known to them for years. “Luckily, it was about six or seven years ago that we knew at least what the final scene is,” he said. “We always knew what the last 40 minutes were going to be.” That revelation is striking. Few series in television history have maintained such consistency in vision over multiple seasons. The Duffers’ long-term storytelling has been one of ‘Stranger Things’ greatest strengths.

Matt Duffer added that writing the final episode came with an emotional toll. “You are having to let go in a way and say goodbye. So we weren’t thinking about that too much when we were writing that final episode. But once we read it through with [the actors], we realized how much it reflected our own experience. And hopefully that emotion that we felt writing it is going to come through to the audience.” It’s clear the finale isn’t just a conclusion for the characters, it’s a goodbye for the cast and creators themselves

Many main characters are shown injured, crying, or trapped in eerie Upside Down environments.  The stakes are clearly higher than ever, and the tone suggests that Stranger Things will not hold back in its final emotional punches.
