Last year, fans learned that season five would not start in Paris like the previous four seasons. Instead, the show revealed that the first part of the new season would take place in Rome. Sure, it was a big change for a series so closely tied to Paris. And this change gained so much momentum that it reached the authorities of two cycles.

Soon after, French President Emmanuel Macron reacted publicly and said he would fight hard to keep the show exclusive in Paris. And soon, Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, answered back to it quickly. However, all of it was done in a very playful way. Posting on X, he told Macron to take it easy and said Emily in Rome was perfect. He added a winking emoji and joked that you can’t control the heart.

The France-Rome banter went viral, and Lily Collins spoke about the situation at the season five premiere in Paris. The 36-year-old actress laughed about it and said to Variety that she never imagined the show would end up in such a political love triangle.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos further addressed the same. They said that ‘Emily in Paris‘ has sparked cultural conversations between France and the rest of the world. Sarandos said people were stuck at home during the COVID lockdowns. They were looking for comfort and escape, and Emily in Paris arrived at just the right time. And maybe that’s why the show means so much to viewers.
Season 5 of ‘Emily in Paris‘ will give us a glimpse of Emily in Rome. There, she’s adjusting to her new life and still very much in love with Italian businessman Marcello Muratori.
