By the time the latest season of ‘Virgin River’ wrapped up, many viewers had one question in mind: how much more can Mel and Jack possibly take?
Now, Martin Henderson himself has stepped in to share his honest thoughts on why the couple’s constant suffering may have gone too far.
Martin Henderson Is Frustrated Over Mel and Jack’s Relentless Struggles In ‘Virgin River’

Mel and Jack hardly ever had it smooth throughout the series, and the latest season didn’t prove any different. After going through a number of miscarriages, stillbirths, and an emotionally draining IVF journey, the couple finally welcomed their adopted son.

However, all the celebration ended in sadness because the baby was born with a serious heart condition that required immediate surgery and a difficult funeral ahead. Referring to all these hardships, Henderson finally spoke up.
Henderson acknowledged that this pattern hasn’t gone unnoticed. He admitted that he has “been very vocal” about wanting less misery and more happiness for the couple, especially after everything they faced.
He also revealed that he would have taken the story in a very different direction. “I wanted a pregnancy in Season 6,” Henderson said, reflecting on the timeline of events. Instead, the show delivered yet another loss in Season 5, a choice he strongly opposed.
Quite frustratingly, he shared, “I was very angry, and I made it known that I did not support that idea creatively.” Still, he accepted that he isn’t the one writing the show.
How Henderson’s Perspective Changed Over Time

Over time, however, his perspective evolved. After stepping back, he began to see the broader storytelling intent behind the repeated challenges. He explained that the show is trying to portray a kind of love that doesn’t rely on a perfect ending.

Henderson said he now sees value in what the showrunner is doing. “Having calmed down about how incensed I was that they lost their baby.” He believes the series presents a more realistic version of relationships, where happiness isn’t guaranteed. Ultimately, the strength of the relationship lies in how the partners handle adversity.
It’s easy to be in love when everything is going well, but Mel and Jack’s story shows what it looks like when a couple has to dig deep and support each other through constant setbacks.
Even showrunner Patrick Sean Smith stands firmly behind the direction of the story. Even though he acknowledges that Mel and Jack have been through a lot, he thinks those challenges surely serve a purpose.
Explaining the Season 7 twist, Smith said, “With Mel being the nurse that she is, and Jack having the strength that he does, I always felt like a baby that needed extra help was the perfect baby for them.” In his view, giving them an easy path wouldn’t have been as compelling or unique.
