‘Peaky Blinders’ Changed Jessie Eden’s Story: The Real-Life Revolutionary Was Nothing Like Tommy Shelby’s Pawn

In Short
  • The portrayal of Jessie Eden in Peaky Blinders diverges significantly from her real-life activism.
  • Eden was a key figure in advocating for working women’s rights during the UK General Strike.
  • Unlike the show’s narrative, Eden remained focused on her work and later joined the Communist Party of Great Britain, rather than being drawn into romantic distractions.

While ‘Peaky Blinders‘ is known for weaving real historical figures into its fictional underworld, its portrayal of Jessie Eden took a strikingly different direction from reality. In the series, she eventually becomes entangled in the orbit of Tommy Shelby, but the real trailblazer was not someone who could be drawn into another person’s game so easily.

Yes, Eden is inspired by an actual woman whose actions helped working women find their voice at a time when speaking up could cost them their jobs, or worse. We are exploring the true story today.

The Inspirational True Story Of Jessie Eden

In contrast to the show, the real Jessie Eden had already begun creating her activist identity years earlier. Born Jessie Shrimpton on 24 February 1902 in Birmingham, she grew up surrounded by industrial hardship that would later fuel her political fire.

As time went on, her personal life took a back seat to her beliefs. She married Albert Eden in 1923 and adopted his surname, but the marriage didn’t last. Later, Jessie openly called it a mistake and said her husband didn’t share her political views. Instead of settling into a quiet life, she focused on the struggles of working women who were expected to accept unfair conditions without complaint.

By the mid-1920s, Jessie worked at the Joseph Lucas motor factory. Day after day, she watched women work hard for little pay and even less respect. So rather than staying silent, she began speaking to her co-workers and encouraging them to stick together. Slowly but surely, women started to realise they weren’t alone.

That unity came to a head during the UK General Strike in May 1926. At the Lucas factory, women demanded better wages and working conditions, and Jessie played a key role in convincing them to walk out. It was a risky move, especially for women at the time, but Jessie believed nothing would change unless they took action.

How ‘Peaky Blinders’ Turned Jessie Eden Controversial

Jessie Eden might’ve started as a fearless firebrand in ‘Peaky Blinders‘, but her story took a romantic turn with Tommy Shelby. In essence, he used her to further his own ambitions and secure a seat in Parliament. Of course, the Shelbys aren’t based on a real family. Their story is inspired by a gang that operated in Birmingham in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

As for Jessie, her story draws from history, but her arc does a disservice to the real revolutionary. Eden stayed focused on activism and joined the Communist Party of Great Britain. In 1931, she helped lead another strike involving around 10,000 women, further strengthening women’s roles in labour movements.

In case you missed it: Why Grace Shelby Was Always Meant To Die In ‘Peaky Blinders’

Unsurprisingly, people who knew Jessie rejected the show’s version of her. Trade union leader Graham Stevenson, who knew her personally, said it was unrealistic to suggest that someone like Tommy Shelby could influence or distract Jessie Eden. There’s also no evidence she ever had a romantic relationship with a factory owner.

Instead, Jessie married Walter McCulloch, a fellow party member, in 1948 and continued fighting for ordinary people for decades. In the end, she inspired working women by showing them what was possible. Eden proved that speaking up mattered, that standing together worked, and that change didn’t come from waiting.

While ‘Peaky Blinders‘ brought her name back into public view, the real Jessie Eden had already left a lasting mark on working women.
