Real Love Story Behind Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This’

While many romantic comedies might be as impossible as a Cinderella story, it is not for Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This.’ The series ranked on Netflix’s Top 10 watching list after its premiere on September 26. Soon show creator, Erin Foster revealed that the humorous story of the show is based on her real love life.

‘Nobody Wants This’ revolves around the unlikely romantic development between an agnostic sex podcaster, Joanne, and a rabbi, Noah. With such an interesting plotline, not wanting to know the origin story is hard. Here’s what Erin Foster revealed about her love story.

The phrase “It only happens on television.” cannot be applied to ‘Nobody Wants This’. Soon after the series gained traction on Netflix, show creator, Erin Foster revealed on Tudum that it is based on her love life with her husband, Simon Tikhman.

“This show is based on the only good decision I ever made: falling for a nice Jewish boy,” Foster told Tudum. “But I realized that being happy is way harder than being miserable—there’s nothing to complain about. So, I created this show based on all the ways that finding the right person can be so hard.”

Erin married Simon in 2019 and the couple welcomed their first daughter named Noa in May. Foster states, “I’m obsessed with Simon; he’s my muse. And this show is like a love letter to him.”

Every love story comes with its challenges and Erin Foster’s was no exception. Simon might not be a rabbi, like Noah, but he is deeply connected to his religion and culture. It came to Foster as a surprise who had been agnostic her entire life. She recalls one of her earlier meetings with Simon in 2018 where he said, “Whoever I marry, she has to be Jewish.”

Foster soon realized the huge cultural differences between their upbringings. She said, “Sara [Foster, her sister] and I come from this very entertainment-centered Los Angeles family with lots of marriages and divorces.” Whereas Simon’s parents, David Foster and Rebecca Dyer were married for several years.

However, Foster decided to embrace the Jewish religion to marry the love of her life. Erin enrolled in a 10-week process at American Jewish University. She told IndieWire, “Listen, I know that when I signed up to convert, I said to my fiancé at the time, ‘If I go through this and I don’t connect with what I’m learning, I’m not gonna do it…because it has to feel right.”

It might not be a fairytale story but is surely one worth listening to. Perhaps that’s why Erin decided to write ‘Nobody Wants This’. You can stream the series on Netflix.
