‘Squid Game’ Season 3: Human Chess Theory Explained

As soon as ‘Squid Game‘ debuted on Netflix, it became an international sensation, startling viewers with its harsh, high-stakes survival games and frank societal criticism. With debt-ridden participants, the show follows them as they are drawn into a fatal tournament in which they must survive a series of kid-friendly games with the catch being that failing means they will die. Viewers are kept on the edge of their seats by the series’ deft use of emotional depth and psychological strain.

Squid Game‘ swiftly rose to prominence as one of Netflix’s greatest hits, smashing records globally and establishing its place in pop cultural history with its distinct blend of suspense, brutality, and tragic human moments. It is one of those shows that, if you have not watched it, people will think you are not cool. As the show heads toward its highly anticipated third season, fans are buzzing with theories about how the story of Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, will conclude. And if this latest theory turns out to be true, we’re in for one of the most intense and mind-bending finales yet.

‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Could Introduce A Brutal Game Of Human Chess

The previous two seasons of ‘Squid Game‘ have been packed with hidden details, and one of the most intriguing Easter eggs has been hiding in plain sight. Both Season 1 and Season 2 teased us with these cryptic sketches and Season 2 even dropped hints of new games we haven’t seen yet. The artwork on the walls, gradually revealed as the bunk beds were removed, depicted the very challenges that awaited the competitors. And according to sharp-eyed fans, the Season 2 walls showcased a game that has yet to make an appearance: a chess board.

Now, if this chess pattern is anything to go by, ‘Squid Game‘ Season 3 might be setting up its most strategic and sinister game yet: human chess. And just how ‘Squid Gmae‘ is, this wouldn’t be a simple combat of cunning and reasoning; rather, it would probably be a bloody battlefield in which competitors sacrifice themselves on the board while two players make decisions. But who would be the masterminds behind this deadly match? All signs point to Gi-hun and the enigmatic Front Man, In-ho, played by Lee Byung-hun, finally facing off in a twisted duel of power, survival, and revenge.

At the end of ‘Squid Game‘ Season 1, Gi-hun makes a bold choice; rather than enjoying his newfound wealth, he vows to take down the very organization that has put him through hell. In Season 2, his return to the games again shows that he’s looking to destroy the system from the inside. However, if this chess theory is right, Gi-hun may find himself in a terrifying situation where he is a strategist who decides who survives and who doesn’t.

The stakes get even higher when you consider his potential opponent: The Front Man. As the former winner-turned-enforcer of the games, In-ho has always been shrouded in mystery, and there’s long been speculation that he’s far more involved in the game’s origins than we realize. Some even believe he’s the son of Oh Il-nam (the old Player 001 from Season 1), making his position in the hierarchy even more complicated. There are also other theories that Gi-hun might become the Front Man himself in the end. If Squid Game Season 3 truly pits Gi-hun and In-ho against each other in a human chess match, it would be the ultimate full-circle moment for two men who have both survived the horrors of the games and are now forced to manipulate others in a fight for control.

A Dark And Twisted Endgame For ‘Squid Game’

Not only is it an interesting concept, but it also makes perfect sense for ‘Squid Game‘ to incorporate chess.  Class conflict, strategic survival, and the brutality of power have all been metaphorically represented throughout the whole series.  A climax with a chess theme would highlight those elements and represent the cruel game that the competitors and game masters have been playing the entire time. And let’s be honest, what better way to witness innocent lives at stake than for Gi-hun and In-ho to square off in a psychological battle? That’s peak ‘Squid Game‘ storytelling.

Of course, how this would play out remains to be seen. Would Gi-hun and In-ho be forced to play as kings, leading their “armies” of real people? Would the chess pieces themselves be given a chance to fight back? And could this be Gi-hun’s opportunity to finally dismantle the games once and for all? Regardless of the exact execution, one thing is certain: ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 is shaping up to be its darkest, most intense season yet. And if this theory holds any weight, we’re all in for a finale that will leave us speechless.

Squid Game‘ Season 3 will be released on June 27, 2025, on Netflix.
